Default Witherspoon and Bunce on Bruno v Witherspoon

When watching the bunce hour Tim mentioned how unpopular Bruno was, Bunce seemed to agree, whilst I am sure there were people out there who didnt like Bruno he did have huge popularity so for evry hater there was about 20 fans, both ITV and BBC televised the fight, BBC TV links between shows were from wembley, pre fight magazines were sold in every newsagents, frank was all over the papers,18 million people watched the fight, 40k at Wembley supporting Bruno - if thats a lack of popularity I dont know what is or perhaps Tim his deaf as he didnt here the crowd booing him!

I think every boxer that has cross over appeal to the none boxing fan / general public gets flack from the purists , yes people in Brixton may not of been franks biggest fans he ceratinly had enough elsewhere

that fight is one of my earliest memories of my childhood.

i always remember sitting on my fathers lap watching it, i am right in thinking that Bruno was sat on the ropes, or knocked through the ropes.

jaysus, i was only 4, talk about making me feel old

Bruno's one of Brtiains best known boxers in the past 20 years, and loads of people loved him, at least towards the end of his career from hwta I can remember.

I see, I didn't know a lot of black folk growing up. I hadn't actually heard what you said, out of context it sounded ridiculous!

Maybe there's an argument that Bruno's popularity only really started to go to a different level when he actually lost a fight...?

I think Bruno was seen as a bit of an 'Uncle Tom', so to speak, wasn't he? There was always an element of distrust there as I think there would've been for anyone from his background who turned out to be a Tory and was adopted by the mainstream as a kind of 'safe black man of the month' in a political climate that wasn't the friendliest to a pretty impoverished black community.

That's my recollection of it too.

A black man with plenty of money and a white wife, voting for the Tories.

Not the sort of behaviour one would expect from a brother, if you are into that kind of thing.

I get the Brixton thing but Tim mentioned people said he cant fight, cant this or that implying that everyone hated him which is far from the case.

The Uncle Tom thing really gets Frank to this day, get him on Boxnation and ask him Steve and see if he carries on laugh and joking. There was no decent black trainers or promoters in Britain at the time but note George Francis did more for Black Boxers in the 70's then any other Manager plus hosts of champions chose George purely on his ability.
To be fair I think anyone who makes a shitload of money suddenley became a Tory in the 80s not so much for politics but on their advice of their accountant!

I think those in the know looked at Bruno's fights against Jumbo Cummings & Bonecrusher and felt that he wasn't really up to it.

Frank was being hyped to the max by the UK press at the time, and Heavyweight Boxing was looking for a big name as the Holmes era had finished. However, the big name post Larry was never going to be Bruno.

Back then, his record was more padded than a cell in the nuthouse, his wins coming against Journeymen and ex-contenders on the verge of retirement.
OK, he did improve a little and get his hands on the WBC belt later on, but that was only a temporary thing as Don King was moving it towards Mike Tyson at the time.
