Anybody check out "The Fight Game with Jim Lampley" last night? I was pleasantly surprised at how well done. The setup was well done, smooth transitions by Jim Lampley, Bob Arum needed to go to sleep, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones made excellent contributions, and they touched upon all the most recent news in boxing. And in 30 minutes, it didn't feel forced, nor rushed. I came in with low expectations and, hell, they massively exceeded them.

I liked the Gatti list idea, didn't like the list itself. The first page of Jorge Arce, Abner Mares, Mike Alvarado, Orlando Salido, and Chris Arreola. You know, that's fine. If we are just talking fighters that bring the action, yeah, no problems with these guys. No need to really nitpick, but the next page I definitely have a problem with. Canelo Alvarez, Sergio Martinez, Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, and Floyd Mayweather. No, no, and no. Come on, really?

Canelo hasn't been in any great, exciting, back and forth fights. And that's a credit to him.

Sergio Martinez? The first Paul Williams fight was 2 1/2 years ago. Macklin and Barker were solid fights, but nothing FOTY material. I thought they were enjoyable, I didn't think they were boring like some people, I thought they were just good, solid fights.

Miguel Cotto? You know, all right, that's fine. We won't nitpick. I probably wouldn't have him in the top 10, but we'll let that slide. It's arguable. Manny

Pacquiao? No, not at all. When was the last time he was in an exciting fight? The JMM fight wasn't a good fight. It was okay, but it wasn't a FOTY candidate, which is what this list is supposed to represent. Fighters that just bring it, back and forth action. The Mosley fight? Terrible. Margarito? Yeah, okay, it was good, but one sided. Clottey? And then again, like Martinez, Pacquiao's great fight has been 2 and a half years now. So, no, Pacquiao shouldn't be on there.

And Floyd? no, just no. Again, that's just a credit to him for being able to dominate without taking much damage. The Cotto fight was good, but come on, that one fight doesn't mean he's one of the most exciting fighters in boxing.

There are more than 4 boxers that should be on the "Gatti list" before Pacquiao, Mayweather, Martinez, and Canelo. Easily. You could probably name 20 fighters. You can roll with Juan Manuel Lopez, James Kirkland, Jean Pascal (he managed to make not one but TWO Bernard Hopkins fights exciting), Brandon Rios, Tavoris Cloud, Hank Lundy...any of these guys would be better replacements for those 4, but not including the fighter that was "the next Gatti" was a bit of a slap in the face I thought. Michael Katsidis definitely deserved a nod.

Anyway, that's the only problem I had with the show. I usually don't get bothered by lists, because, really, it doesn't matter, but in this case I thought those 4 clearly didn't deserve to be on the list. No way. Overall, though, it was a good show. I look forward to it in June.

PICK:

5/16 - Francisco Pianeta vs. Oliver McCall - 10x3 (Germany Das Vierte)
Pianeta UTFD
- I expect a difficult fight for Pianeta against the ancient bull, with 97-93/96-94 like scores.
