Tunney's low hands against Patterson's fast combinations? Yeah Tunney was a thinking fighter but Floyd's style and speed advantage are too big of an obstacle to overcome for Gene. He may drop Floyd early but in the Floyd would score simply much more and would end up winning by a quite clear margin. Floyd UD.

All this talk about Tunney's "low hands" is interesting.
Tunney was known to be pretty hard to hit, I don't think the way he placed his hands cost him much.

Patterson's weird "peek a boo" was more of an issue.

To be honest.....I would say Tunney was harder to hit....
And......imo, Gene´s footwork would be a problem for Patterson.....

Close fight....with Tunney by decision.....

If Patterson gets to mid range with his bobbing and weaving and fast feet Tunney would be very easy to hit with low hands. Tunney is reliant on an opponent not getting to mid range by backing them up with the jab/right or countering with the right on the way in, if his opponent evades these attacks and gets to mid-range, he's effectively ****ed, ala Barrera-Hamed. Boxing 101 right there

Gene´s jab was better.........and Tunney could clinch, and he was extremely strong in the clinch, with some very good uppercuts......

Agreed he has the better jab, he's just very very reliant on having his man outside and/or backed up behind his jab/right. You saw what happened when Dempsey got into range, it's because of those low hands. I think Patterson is the best HW he's faced and gets in range more often.

Again I made a pick earlier in the thread and see it as a KO either way, both can get to 1 another

Patterson is grossly over rated by many here ... Tunney would easily decision him and possibly stop him ...

The chances of Patterson effectively and consistently evading Tunney's jab and right on his way in are slim. It's he who would be needing to adjust his hand habits pretty quick, and he wouldn't know how.

One of these guys was routinely decked by amateurs and palookas, and it wasn't Tunney.

There's a boxing lesson there alright.

I dont know who I would pick. Tunney is amazing, but Patterson is so, so dangerous.

And yes, Dempsey clocked Tunney because he got lazy for one second with range and his hands are kept too low. If Patterson got the same opportunity, it would have the same result.

If Ingo could find Patterson with rights.....then Tunney will too.

Slow beatdown by Tunney until stoppage in 10th with Patterson's face swollen up.

I'd bet on Tunney, but it wouldn't be an easy fight for him. Tunney by close decision, in my opinion.

Tunney would not keep hands so low if he was getting caught, he had the ability to adjust.
Patterson was nice guy, but seems very overrated on here. He, or rather Cus D'Amato, ducked all top contenders, even refusing to fight either one of 2 contenders who fought a draw in title shot elimination. Patterson was also down a lot in different fights. Didn''t the Olympic champ knock him down when paterson gave him title shot in guys first pro bout?
