Sorry this isnt carrying on from the current topic but after using my newly acquired gif making powers I thought I'd share.

Some Marquez combinations...mixing to head & body, hook & uppercuts from both hands

Combinations with left uppercuts..

Back to Monzon and his rhythm building. Once he'd got his man down and had found the timing for his right hand, it was scarily accurate, and almost unavoidable. And he turned his punches over right at the end of the extension, which meant they started off slow and sped up quickly just before impact, making them unpredictable even though the punch selection was often the same.

Brutal man. You'd think a psycho would fight like Sung Kil-Moon, but Monzon was more like a mix of Hannibal Lecter and The Terminator; cold-blooded surgeon.

Nice work Mo; Marquez one of the few 'modern' punchers on a par with the best from history. Great composite (all-round) technique.

Marquez really does well in taming speed. His 'taming' of Derrick Gainer is a great example.

What Monzon did well aswell was he never let his opponent get the upperhand. What i mean by that is, anytime his opponent started to get in the ascendancy he would come straight back with those bludgening right hands set up by that heavy lead and put them back in their place. Whatever adjustments you tried to make Monzon didn't let you take control of the fight. He maximised his strengths and of course had insane stamina which was wierd for someone of his lifestyle. Just as well really because he was a slow starter for the most part.

Yeah, I've heard (probably bollocks) tales of him smoking whilst doing his roadwork Leg'.

How do you score the Valdez fights? I don't rate Valdez allthat much but he did better than most, admittedly right near the end of a tremendous run for the Argie.

I really respect Napoles' efforts, especially in the first couple of rounds where he steps in with his hooks. And finished on his feet! A classic example of a performance in a loss doing as much for a fighters reputation as a win.

I think Monzon won both fights and won it close but clean imo. Valdez was a versatile fighter who is somewhat underrated for me. He was very rugged, but could box and had a big dig. His problem was he had a lot of outside the ring problems which probabily affected his career. And if Monzon wasn't in the same era and he just had to fight the likes of Briscoe he would be thought of different. Doing that at the end of his career says a lot about Monzon. The jab won the second fight for him. Which was a great ebb and flow fight. Valdez came on, IIRC. How Monzon was able to take those right hands i don't know. Great chin.

I actually think Valdez gets quite overrated. He was a round sleeper, which I'm really not a fan of. His K.O win over Briscoe is insane though, and he mixed Up his work well. Certainly the top contender at the time, but I've seen some uninspiring showings from him.

His gym seemed to breed insanely hard punchers! Another one from the same place? Molinares, who banged out Moochy!

I really think drug abuse had a massive effect on him.

Btw, Monzon getting up from the right hand bomb is one of the greatest things i've ever seen.

Incredible. ain't it. I think it was like 2 secs max and when he got up he looked 'fresh' lol. What was he like 38 years old?

36 maybe? Although he didn't take a lot of damage in his career. There's the famous pic' of Briscoe badly jarring him to the body and sending him reeling, but for most of his time it seems his mastering of range kept him out of trouble.

Flea. Can you post some Monzon footage, mate? We can't talk about Monzon for so long without getting some footage up.
