Default Corbett KO'd Jeffries.

As a response to Mendoza's oft repeated assertion ,that Gunboat Smith tko'd Jack Johnson, here is a link that shows Jim Corbett knocked out Jim Jeffries in a set -to in his training camp.

This was kindly sent to me by another poster, who may reveal himself later, thanks again to him.

It should be interesting watching Mendoza try and wriggle out of this one.

"monkey with the buzz-saw" This era's reporting is total hit and miss, but this guy knew his job.

We should all be wary of the Effete East.

This is a junk report, and the only one of its kind. Boxing has its share of lone false reports. Neither Corbett or Jeffries ever mentions this happening! No historian mentions it! No book mentions it! The only thing Corbett said was Jeffries was the perfect sparring partner because he took his blows. Never did Corbett say he floored Jeffries. After fighting Jeffries twice, Corbett said you could not hurt him, not even with an ax. This sounds like one of those bogus stories to hype a fight, which in this case was Corbett vs. Fitzsimmons.

I see a huge difference here between Johnson and Gunboat Smith. For openers, Johnson wasn't green when this happened. He was the champion. Johnson was down and dazed in a 4 round exhibition match to the point where his manager had to halt the match! There are multiple reports of this happening, and both Smith and Johnson talk about. Books mention it to, and sometimes historians do the same.

Actually it's a primary source. I've read that Corbett dazed Jeffries several times ,but never been able to get any detail.

This not only supplies it, it names the day, time , and place.
Those who were present, and gives a blow by blow account.
Jeffries , out of it for three minutes ,and being lifted to his feet, by Corbett and Charlie White

Ko'd by perhaps the lightest hitting heavyweight champion of all time, who weighed in the low 180's at the time.
You will just have to learn to live with it.

For the record ,Smith NEVER floored Johnson ,he put him halfway through the ropes, in sparring .he did NOT KO or TKO him either. This is verified by Smith's own taped interview.

Smith was a heavy duty banger with his right hand. Corbett was perhaps the lightest hitting Champ of the heavies.

YOU ARE NOW THE BITER BIT .
HOISTED WELL AND TRULY ,ON YOUR OWN MENDACIOUS , AGENDA DRIVEN ,PETARD.

It couldn't happen to a more suitable person.

In Pollack's book on Jeffries he hs many reports of Corbett insisting he had knocked down Jeffries in sparring ... the question of the validity of the claim has always been the issue as Corbett made it many times and Jeffries denied it all along ...

That's good confirming info H.E.

It flies in the face of Mendoza's assertions , but hey, no surprise there .Thanks again.

I have now completely rethought how jeffries does in fantasy matches.

Byrd stops him
Young stops him
Johnson did stop him
Ali stops him
Jersey stops him etc

Considering the era we should all treat this as an actual ko defeat for james meaning he's been knocked out by both corbett and johnson!

The Rocky Mountain New, The Salt Lake Herald and New York World all report on March the 10th, 1897, that Corbettt dropped Jeffries in sparring.
