Default Favourite Joe Louis performances ?

Joe Louis was the greatest heavyweight of all time, IMO.

Here are some of the fights I think are worth checking out :

V. Max Baer - an awesome display, I love it when Louis lands that triple left hook, and some of those other shots. Incredible, such fast hands and so powerful. The initial exchanges (either 1st or 2nd round) are great when Baer tries to open up and bull Louis back and Louis shoots back with short sharp punches inside Baer's wider ones. Louis was awesome that night.

V. Max Schmeling 2 - Louis just takes him apart, in quick time. Flawless.

V. Billy Conn 1 - Louis has a lot of difficulty with Conn, but Conn is fighting out of his skin in there. The thing is, the fight was close, not the boxing lesson some make it out to be. Louis's was fighting his SEVENTH DEFENSE IN AS MANY MONTHS ! Anyway, the coolness and smart boxing Louis shows is impressive. Not his most commanding win but a true demonstration of his will and quality.

V. Abe Simon 2 - Every punch Louis lands sends shockwaves through Simon's 255 pound hulk. Simon isn't anywhere near Louis's class but he's brave and hefty and awkward. Louis goes right at him though, tearing into him from all angles. Louis's power is frightening, and his skills are superb. Simon looks like the kind of fighter who'll either get knocked out or turn a fight into an untidy maul. Louis manages to avoid the untidy maul and just methodically ruins Simon, in artistic style.

Another fight I'm sure I used to have on VHS is Louis-Buddy Baer 2.
Louis takes him apart in 1 round. I'd love to find that damn tape again !

Louis - Baer : awesome display of accurate power punching, showing such disregard for the huge punching Baer.

I like the Galento fight best. Galento surprises Louis with a hard, quick left hook in the first. Louis recovers and scores a beautiful right hand-left hook knockdown in the 2nd. Then in the 3rd, Galento catches Joe with a perfect left hook as he comes in, knocks him down, Louis is up immediatly and from there on, he dissects Galento and beats the **** out of him until the referee stops it in the 4th when Tony staggers into the ropes.

I'm fond of Louis-B. Baer II. Buddy had made a lot over how many punches it took Louis to knock him down in the first fight; in the rematch Joe did an ice-cold, one-round surgery on BB.

Max Baer was the one opponent which Louis felt himself to be at his physical peak against, and that's a bout I repeatedly screen frame by frame. To me, the triple hook knockdown Joe concluded round three with is the single greatest second of his entire boxing career.

Although that was a phenomenal demonstration of handspeed and mobility, I consider his ultimate evolution as a competitor to have been realized in the rematch with Godoy. Louis was supposed to have difficulty backing up, and admittedly did not like to be crowded, but with Jack Blackburn's strategizing, he did a masterful job of cutting Godoy's face into a disfigured mess, producing a superb example of sharp leverage punching in retreat.

To me they're all boring, I actually enjoy ability and skill when watching boxing.

My personal favorite is the Simon rematch. He showed the most skill and power in that one, ouitclassing and outbombing a 6'-4" 255lb. ripped superheavyweight like he did. Classic.

BORKED

Watch the big left hook at 3:07. Savage!!!!

Notice that Louis delivered that hook from a southpaw stance instead of lunging in.
