He was the fastest man in boxing during his heyday. (I'm going to bed now, but let's see where that starter comment leads.)

He was great amateur, average pro. he had close calls and some gift decisions in Larry Stanton and Norman Goins fights. Being popular Olympic Gold medalist halped him in pro career , he got fights he needed, and was moved along well. Budddy McGirt took him out fast also.

Never very keen on engaging ,threw many punches with no intention of them landing , not my cup of tea at all. Talented ,but with a ticker problem , if you can reasonably say that about any professional pugilist?

I'll toss out the flip side a little bit. Good fighter. Great Amateur, good pro. Lost a razor close decision for the title in Puerto Rico to Edwin Rosario. I believe a last round knockdown cost him the title. Did I mention this was in Puerto Rico?
Also had a draw with a young, nearing his prime Meldrick Taylor. It could easily be argued that he deserved both of those decisions. Either or both of those wins on his resume shines Davis in a little better light.

Like Duo said, was the fastest man in boxing in his heyday. However, his heart wasn't into being a professional fighter, and in addition, probably didn't have the right trainers and managers handling his career.Had a legit draw against Meldrick Taylor, and lost to Joe Manley and Buddy McGuirt, and lost a close fight on that last minute knockdown to Edwin Rosario, a fight he wouldn't have had to fight had he beaten Jim Watt in the first place.Oh Yeah, almost got his head knocked by that famous Tony Bazaltar hook. Was very talented, just probably didn't have that it factor.
