Foreman KO5.

Big George should be able to grille Sonny.

A Sonny Liston fact,,,,,,,

He only fought two men over 220 lbs.
Gerhard Zech and Chuck Wepner
Though he won both bouts, he was far from over-whelming.

Sonny did not like to fight bigger men,,,,,,,

And I have all the Sonny Liston facts, figures and more.

I think Liston takes it. I don't see one fighter being more powerful as even an issue in this one. They both hit hard enough to take the other out if given the opening. Neither fighter has a brilliant chin (like Ali, Chuvalo), but neither has a weak chin either. I see Liston as a more skilled version of Foreman. I also see prime Liston as more versatile in the ring. They both had powerful jabs that were a huge part of their success. I suspect Sonny's was the better of the two, though. Liston's arm length, jab and power neutralize a lot of what made Foreman successful against other fighters. I also think Liston would have been more patient and less likely to become frustrated in this type of a match. George is more likely to go all out against Liston and get tired later on. In my opinion, this would be a fight with some shaky moments for both fighters, but Liston would prevail with a TKO/KO in rounds 7-10.

And Sonny Liston liked to take on the little guys.

Sonny Liston signs to fight Davey Jones.

Sonny stated that Jones is; 'a tough little monkey'

I didn't know that Foreman Hook. Apparently Liston was a sixty years old in that fight (While somehow being only 38 for the Clay fight). It's swept under the rung and it's excusable. But Martin didn't just KO him, he separated him from consciousness. Not something anyone cares to talk about, and that's fine. Of course, they enjoy talking about his underrated post Ali ranked scrap win over #9 rated Henry Clark, who Liston beat a little over a year before losing to Martin.

The point is Liston has one of the smallest windows allowed to "properly" evaluate him. Ali stunned him in round 3 or so, and so did Cleveland Williams. No shame in that, but I don't recall Ali's power ever stunning Foreman in that way. Foreman gassed, and Ali made him pay. Foreman still beat the count though. Ali hit arguably quite a bit better in 74 than he did in 64 as well.

Liston is all wrong for Foreman stylisticaly.

Every time Foreman breathed, Liston would have countered him.

It would have been like the Lyle fight, except that Liston would have finished what he started.

I'd pick Liston too.

If it went 15 rounds.

But I think Foreman gets him outta there well before the final bell.

I think it comes down to who had whose number mentally and psychologically. I give that edge to Liston. Yes Liston wilted under the psychological pressure of Clay but when it came to basic thuggery and intimidation, I think Liston edges it.

Skill wise, Liston has the better Jab, and moves his head better. Punch power, Foreman had the more denser heavier punches but Liston seemed to have a bit more snap in his punches...toss up that could go either way...having said that Foreman has arguably the better chin by far.....toss up but I favor Listons straighter punches to get him a UD....I can't see big george getting sparked...Just doesn't happen, forget Zaire, one off occasion that wont be repeated. Then again if Clay's punches could stun and visibly hurt Liston then maybe he doesn't last 12 with Foreman??

I would take Foreman in a more technical bout than his fight with Lyle. I think Foreman overcomes Liston's technical superiority with brute strength and power. Both men are damaged from this fight no doubt about it.

Foreman KO 6

My view as well. I like Sonny here on technical skill, but Foreman was bigger and in my view stronger. I am not considering George at 19 here but at 24.

George was no Cleveland Williams, and he'll be pushing Sonny and bombing him. Liston took a good punch, but I don't think he'll take Foreman's. George by KO late.

what do you prefer, straight and accurate or looping and bludgeoning?
do you believe foreman can, and will, force liston to fight on the backfoot?

i prefer straight punches but believe that foreman will physically impose himself, make sonny uncomfortable, and land enough punches to do some damage. if he does that, he takes liston in 9.
