Some might disagree with his views but the guy loved the sport.

Rest in piece.

He was a good guy.
This - really shocked by the news - really liked hearing him rattling on about the fights and the fighters - and always struck me as one of those faces you'd always see at the fights milling about - its too young - thought he'd live to be 200 - very sad - bloody cancer!! why can't a guy just enjoy a few cigars?? Rest In Peace Bert - although I imagine resting is the last thing you'll be doing - you'll probably get your fight hat on and go find Jack Dempsey up there and have a good old chin wag with him - here's to you Bert

I will miss the old devil!

He brought personality to the sport as much as any fighter.

RIP Bert. You were one of the sports most prolific and vocal supporters....and one of the most entertaining writers in it's history.

A very eccentric & entertaining character, RIP Bert.

I'll miss his signature hat & cigar.

I can smell the smoke when I see and hear him speak. I hope his ghost haunts POS Jose Suckamain just for fun. (And Dung King, and other favored targets of his disdain and contempt.)

Damn, damn, damn.

Here's to the man who presided over The Ring's recovery after the scandal crippled it and gave us arguably its best years since 1970.... 1979-1983.

Lawyer, former ad-man, he loved the Sweet Science and the Sweet Science loved him.

One thing that Sugar should always be respected for, is his deffence of James Douglas when Don King tried to cheat him out of his hard won title belts, and two of the major sanctioning bodied were going along with it.

His efforts forced them to back down!

Spoke with him several times. He published some of my earliest work as a neophyte boxing writer in the 90s. For that I shall always be grateful to him.

Safe travels, Bert.....

R.I.P He was usually right in what he said, never forget him blowing up at Morisson-Rudock stoppage, he loved the sport. I always enjoyed listening to & reading his opinions.

It is a sad night for boxing this.

If he were alive he'd be smoking that cigar telling a boxing story somewhere, heck he's probably up there doing that right now.

I don't care that he had lewis about 20 in his hw list, the guy's knowledge was brilliant matched by his conviction, enthusiasm and charisma.

Rip.
