Default Heavyweight Gatekeepers

Basically the guys who may or may not have not been champion but was a test for future champs to go through that stepping stone for progress. You can name different ones you feel come into this category. One that comes to mind is James "Quick" Tillis

I am surprised no one has said Jerry Quarry

ANY ex-champion is an automatic stepping-stone type

For a few years in the late 80s Ossie Ocasio and Jerry Jones caused issues for some of the 88 Olympians. Lionel Washington in the era, was a fun fighter too.
