Default If you can bring back one fighter....

If you could bring back one fighter from the past to compete today, who would it be? Let`s take one fighter from each of the original 8 weight classes, and you have the option of adding two weight divisions that are among those that were recently introduced in the last twenty years. I`ll start first:

Flyweight: Fighting Harada

Bantamweight: Alfonso Zamora

Featherweight: Danny Lopez

Jr.Lightweight: Bobby Chacon

Lightweight: Ike Williams

Welterweight: Carmen Basilio

Jr.Middleweight: Eugene "Cyclone" Hart

Middleweight: Eduardo Lausse

Lightheavyweight: Matthew Saad Muhammad

Heavyweight: Jerry Quarry

So much is made of Sam Langford and Charlie Burley it would indeed be interesting to see what they've got under the modern microscope

Great pick in Hart.

Be interesting seeing him decapitate people today.

Titan and Area,

You can pick one fighter from each of the original 8 weight divisions, and add two other weight classes that were added in the last 20 years. That makes for a total of ten past fighters you can choose altogether, perhaps I didn`t make that clear in my original post? If I didn`t then I hope this has cleared up the matter.

A few of us want Ike Williams back, then. I think he'd mash all the lightweights around today or in the last few years. Depends how often he was fighting; perhaps a couple of the slick ones could turn the trick on him*, but fighters like Castillo or Corrales would have gotten torn up.

*It's hard predicting Williams' fantasy fights against boxers. Mostly they seemed to give him trouble, but on occasions he outboxed them.

are they selfish reasons?

for the good of the sport a Tyson / Dempsey type figure would be better as it would capture the general publics imagination

Well, not quite!

While the fighters I mentioned did not necessarily have crossover appeal to the masses, they were all TV friendly fighters who would have brought in more fans to the sport. All the fighters I mentioned either had KO power, TV friendly styles or both, and they came to "fight" and thus would have definately brought in more casual fans to the sport.

I mean who in their right minds wouldn`t want to have a Bobby Chacon or Little Red around today? They weren`t crossover starts with your average Tom, Dick and Harry`s that is true, but they sure would have gotten people`s attention and earned the kind of money they deserved while entertaining us fans to no end.

I noticed that most of you are still only naming one fighter, when I clearly specified you can name up to ten fighters of your choosing. So far only Dan has done a comprehensive list, surely the rest of you lot could do the same? C`mon now, this is going to be a farily boring thread unless we have more people putting in a bit of effort.
