BEDFORD boxer Matt Skelton is going all out to make a swift return to the big time after announcing he will headline a bill at the Bedford Corn Exchange next month, writes Mike Simmonds.
The 45-year-old is a former WBU heavyweight champion and has also held the Commonwealth and European belts too in his a career. After over a year out of the ring, Skelton came back in dominant fashion to destroy Tom Dallas last month. He said: “I want to get through this fight and then I’m looking at British and Commonwealth titles again. “Win those and it puts you in the top 10 in the European Championships. Win one of them and it puts you in the world ranking, that can be a quick turnaround. “If you take the right fight at the right time, within a year you would be looking at a fight for the world title.” Fellow Brit Dereck Chisora recently had the opportunity to fight Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight championship and when asked which of the Klitschko brothers he would rather come up against, Skelton said: “To me, I always thought Vitali was the better fighter, but Vladamir has really come through and seems more hungry. “Vitali looked a bit tired (against Chisora). I don’t know whether he didn’t train 100 per cent as he thought it would be a walkover fight. “At this stage, I don’t want to even think that far ahead. This next fight in Bedford is an important fight. “I need to get through it, and need to get through it convincingly.” The Corn Exchange bill is being staged by Luton’s Shamrock Boxing Club in conjunction with Dennis Hobson Promotions. When unveiling the fighters to the media, Shamrock trainer Mervyn Turner said: “Getting Matt on board is a proud moment for me, a privilege. Matt is Britain’s answer to Bernard Hopkins and George Foreman. “We’re very, very proud to have Matt boxing for the first time in Bedford in his career. It’s great for the area. Matt wanted to give something back to the community and this is the chance to give something back to the Bedford public.” Skelton said: “For my name to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys, I don’t put myself on that kind of pedestal. They’re great fighters. The Bedford Bear, who has 26 wins from 32 fights, has never fought in his home town and was delighted to be bringing something back to the fans who have followed him all round the world. He added: “Bedford has got a good history for boxing, but it’s hard to get professional shows. Hopefully, we’ll get some good support, not just for myself but the other guys. “I was there once, not as young, but when you first start, I booked my first show in Elephant and Castle, 20-30 people came up and supported me. “I remember what strikes me is when I fought Michael Sprott in Reading, anybody would have thought it was our home town. The amount of support that came up was great. “It’s a boost to the morale and confidence, makes you feel good and makes you feel you’re doing it for the supporters.” |

He is right about Vitali looking tired in the Chisora fight. The rest is hype- he's a British level fighter at best now. I doubt Fury would fight him as he's awkward and it wouldn't be a great spectacle.
