That first photo with Ellerbe behind is somewhat interesting. That stretch routine must get the gym pumping like a prison shower.

Some people don't feel the need to stretch before or after workouts. I don't stretch either and I've never had cramping problems or any other such problems before with working out.

Oh Lord, this happens with every Mayweather quote :roll

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fI2vHk7eMU[/ame]

Here he says he just started doing yoga because he never stretched before since he was 19. I'm sure he did a stretch every now and then, but not thoroughly. If you ever watch him train live (I have 3 times now), you'll see he usally runs straight in the ring with no warmup or stretching

Yes but the asana postures of yoga are themselves a form of stretching. Unless yoga exercises are medically different enough to not be stretching?

he acknowledges now that he stretches (since yoga is basically that), but he was saying before he didn't.

statci stretchin reduces jumping force/height for up to 10 minutes, its all about dynamic stretching.

Stretching weakens the muscle. Whenever you go to a gym and you see people stretch before a workout, they're making a mistake. You should stretch after a workout, in order to damage the muscle further. This idea that you're somehow making yourself more flexible isn't true. All a boxer needs to do is start slow and steadily build the intensity in order to avoid injury.

There's a difference between active flexibility and passive flexibility. As long as you can move dynamically through the ROM that you need for your sport then there's no need for stretching.
If you think flexibility prevents soreness or injury then you need to leave the 80s and come join us in 2012.
Stretching may in fact increase the chances of injury, especially if you perform static stretches before exercise.
Stretching before exercise increases the compliancy temporarily which means the muscle can stretch further but it also means that it takes less force to overstretch it and injure it. Muscle tears often occur within 20% of maximum range of motion anyway.
When you hold a static stretch there is a lengthening of the sarcomere and the actin and myosin can't cross cycle effectively, what happens is the forces on the muscle get transferred to the cytoskeleton. That's not good.
Stretching also messes with your response to pain, the same way icing does. Poor afferent responses to the brain means that you'll get poor responses going back the other way.
Stretching before exercise very likely increases your chance of injury. I wouldn't argue against anybody doing static stretching afterwards, but it isn't a necessity.

yeah I don't like static stretching unless it's in a separate session or after I workout.
Before I train or workout, I do dynamic stuff like arm circles and swings.

Now I have just started doing yoga myself 2 days ago and to anybody that boxes on this site, I highly recommend it. I can feel it's benefit almost right away. no homo

I did the P90X yoga on youtube for 90 minutes

Dynamic stretches before performance to prevent injury, increase ROM.

Static stretching relaxes the nervous system and lessens power output.
