I gave Berbick B- . Maybe I am rating in retrospect. Spinks I gave an A to. A the time he was the best. Beat Holmes 2 times, Cooney and that Tangstad guy. No one expected Mike to blow him out in one. Biggs was a shame. They rushed him into fight Mike.

Do you know the story of larry vs tyson?

Holmes was paid millions by Don King to get out of retirement asap and fight Mike because they wanted Holmes name on Mike's list. He was suppose to retire immediatly afterwards but he got sucked back into boxing and did very well when he was fully motivated and trained. The version of Holmes that fought Mike had zero training and basically just stepped out of his house for a pay day

Holyfield was the only A fighter he ever fought that was still an A fighter when the match happened

Though Spinks was a light heavyweight and inactive, he was still at the top of the division, a fine fighter, and to blow him out in a round is highly impressive to me.

Good fighter.

vs Carl Williams 1989: Grade: C+
Was once a good, promising fighter. By this point, was a never-was with a ton of lost potential. Hadn't achieved anything or demonstrated any recent form to make this a B-defence.

That puts his average at a B-, which sounds about right to me. Not a great era, but he fought just about everybody good in it. Missed a few, like Holyfield, but on the whole, its a complete resume, if not a great one.

A 38 year old exgreat dragged out of retirement by the smell of cash, rusty as hell, out of shape, and unmotivated.

Great performance by Tyson, but I feel a majority of the other guys on the list beat the Larry Holmes of that night. I much prefer his cowing of Tucker and his blowout of Spinks.

Fair enough, this seems like a harsh assessment. How much better was Holmes versus Holyfield and Mercer? I tend to think this was quite possibly Tyson's best performance so that might be our difference of thought on this one.

Pete just look at Old Holmes against Holy, he was clearly in much better shape!
