Default Michael Spinks Power - Overrated?

Was it more of a case of his power being frightening at LHW but not so much as a HW?

I hear Holmes shrugged off everything he threw at him.

The Jinx was a fine punch and although it will be remembered more at Light Heavyweight; Cooney found out Spinks' power carried.

And Spinks hit Holmes hard enough with the right hand, that The Big Black Cloud did not feel he could just walk straight though Spinks.

His power wasn't overrated, he just moved up.

Holmes took a lot of good punches in his career, only being stopped once in that long of a career is very impressive. No stain against Spinks' punch using Holmes as an example.

This is how I See it. As a light heavyweight, Spinks power on a 1-10 scale was about an 8.0. As a heavyweight it was a 5.5

Yeah, it's not fair to say his power is overrated when you say he didn't do anything to Holmes because Holmes took monster punches from some of the greatest heavyweight punchers and still won.

An 8? Who is a 10 at light heavy? Who is a 10 anywhere?

Spinks power at Light Heavyweight was 10. At Heavyweight it is closer to 8 or 7.5 maybe.

Using Holmes isn't the best example to use go show Michael's power, Larry had one of the greatest chins of all time and shook off all of Shavers' punches, even that monster right hand. Spinks showed that he could hit though, the way he dropped Cooney (although Cooney didn't have the best of chins).

Spinks power was very solid.. He was by no means at all underated..
Larry is a bad example as he had a fab chin.. One of the best and he even boxed very wary in many rounds.

Power.. Ask one man.. Gerald Cooney.. He felt the force, so did Steff Tangtadt.. That was a good punching heavy / light heavy..

Never over rated......

BORKED

Don't know if this proves or disproves anything, but here's Michael Spinks stopping Gerry Cooney.

Enjoy.

The question is immaterial. Spinks was about as hard a puncher at 175 as we've seen. He moved up, plain and simple; it wasn't just five or ten pounds either, he went after the big boys. Number one, he was hitting a much bigger man in Holmes, who had a good chin, and number two, he fought in a manner that didn't lend itself to powerpunching, skitting all over the ring as he did. His plan was to dance, move, and flurry against Holmes in order to confuse him, not overpower him. His heavyweight resume should have zero bearing on his power punching. Besides, Tangstad and Cooney were little more than punching bags.

Spinks power is rated right where it should be from what I've read, excellent @ light heavy and good @ heavy. That Marvin Johnson KO was one of the best 1 punch KO's I've ever seen, and old Marvin was making a very good showing up to that point. If memory serves me, Matthew Saad Muhammad had to soften up Marvin for quite a few rounds before he finally put him away. Moving up 25 lbs. to heavyweight is gonna take at least a little sting off the punches of anyone and Spinks is no exception but he still got the job done against Cooney, though he nailed him good throughout that fight. Foreman vs. Cooney shows you what real heavyweight power is, and I think Cooney was in better shape for the fight against George.

Bill, dont you feel that Larry was well over the hill by 1985? It seems to me he wasnt the same fighter at the beginning of 1983 and was struggling not only to win but just to put some fighters away. His days as a fistic threat were over and he came across as mediocre to me.
