Default Karate vs. Boxing -- three matches in Russia

I've always enjoyed this footage. Notice that the left hooks do the damage:

Man, you hate that shit.

Did a karateka once run up from behind and kick you in the balls and run away?

lol....I love it.

I think it has a lot to do with how people actually practice the art.
So much of Karate's effectiveness is lost when people practice fighting for points, rather than full contact ass-kicking.

I remember as a kid watching a karate tournament once, and was so disappointed at how each fighter was so unconcerned about putting any kind of power or weight into any shot, but instead simply tapping each other with toes, or open palms as many times as possible using striking methods that really couldnt' hurt anybody.

I still believe in Karate as an effective art. But so many people are practicing it wrong.
Especially with all the strip mall dojos full of soccer moms and their 7 yr old kids.
I'm just horrified to think of how many people out there actually practice it this way, and then get beat up by some untrained average Joe. Man, that's gotta be a lesson in humility.

On the other hand, i've seen some full contact Karate fighters on TV in a real UFC style contest dish out some unreal punishment, i'm talking fight ending blows in a split second type shit. So no disrespect to the art at all, just to how it's practiced a lot of the time.

To be fair, I've also posted plenty of impressive stuff from old school karate kumite. Brennan, Hall, the entirety of the 1960s point fighters' footage available on Youtube, lots of JKA stuff, a couple modern MMA fights, etc. Even WKF karate has some points in its favor.

Because that's what they've been doing in all of their sparring since day 1. Which is the main weakness of a lot of point sparring styles.

I suppose so. I mean for kids I guess it's OK to pull a punch but at a certain point you need to learn how "close the show." These traditional schools are gonna keep losing.

Remember, the reason those Karate guys don't throw with full power is because their hand techniques are designed to kill.

Geez, just imagine if the boxers had no gloves on like the karate guys. They'd still be asleep!

Discipline versus discipline will come down to execution. In general, Karate vs Boxing is about application and that is where I think boxing will tend to win out.

Boxers, even at the lowest level get involved in real contact, very early in their education. A boxer quite quickly is looking to execute fast, hard and ultimately concussive punches, even as an amateur.

If someone trains the same way in karate (and you will find many of them do) then they are equally dangerous. Too often people engage in the Karate to boxing equivalent of boxercise - that isn't Karate.

Karate's emphasis on range, speed and a quick/deadly finish makes it highly effective. However, another thing that works in boxings favour is that the ultimate way of executing karate (Machida for example) is significantly more difficult than executing boxing. Average joes, with little talent could knock you the **** out with good punching technique where as someone using karate with little talent is generally quite useless.

I love boxing way more than any martial art so it's great to see even wearing gloves the boxers kick ass here, but i agree with some of the guys above that the karate guys were definitely not 'fighting' as a boxer does, it did look like they were trying to score points rather than knock the other guy out which is a shame

If anyone knows of any more fights like this where both sides are evenly matched please send them my way i'd like to see
