Default Joe Louis KO 6 Lee Savold

Seems Walcott really destroyed Louis's plans for a rematch with Charles for the title. A Louis-Charles rematch would have been interesting.

By the time Joe Louis at age 36 fought Ezzard Charles in 1950,and was soundly whipped ,Louis was a shot fighter against younger top-notch heavyweights like Charles and Marciano...Louis was Joe louis in 1950 in name only...A rematch with Ezzard would have ended with the same result as the first bout...The Joe louis that annihilated John Henry Louis and Max Baer, would have pulverized any version of Ezzard Charles, good as Ezzard was...The lithe trip-hammer young Brown Bomber was very probably the greatest two-handed puncher ever seen in combinations, speed and concussive power in his glorious prime....

I'm taking another look at him right now, and I think you might be right. He has company, but I think nobody clearly above him.

I think Louis would have done better in the rematch against Charles in 1951

Also remember that Motivation, Focus, and Training is very important to a fighter which would be the case with the difference between Joe in the Baer fight and Joe in the Schmeling fight. I guess we saw some proof in that in their rematch.

Joe just wasn't the same in the 50's. Sad. He should have been able to retire when he originally had. He knew it was over.

True...But THIS Max Schmeling in 1936 for this ONE fight was NEVER better
before or after as a fighter...THIS Max Schmeling would have been a tough opponent for anyone that night, much the same as Buster Douglas was in his ko of Mike Tyson many years later...And even in this ko of young Joe Louis, Schmeling with his laser right hand bounced dozens of blows on Louis's chin, and Louis survived til the 12th round....Schmeling when he was on his game was a tough great right-handed puncher, for sure...

I think it was 72 flush right hands to put Joe away, I think that was the number. Didn't Max, previous to that, kill a man with one right hand?

I wonder how Louis' footwork, that shuffle he had, would stack up today. I can't think of anyone who ever tried to emulate it...as far as I'm aware.

Mc I think you are referring to Max Baer who killed Frankie Campbell in the ring before the Louis fight.

It seems i've confused him with something...i'm on google and i can't find even a single reference to Schmeling killing someone, or someone dying due to innjuries inflicted by Schmeling. Anyone?

You confused Schmeling with Baer.

I think Louis was a clear better fighter in 1938 than he was in 1935. Louis was a kid in 1935, he became a man by 1938.
