Default Anyone train on here get busy with sledgehammer training?

Any of you boxers on here use the sledge hammer? What kind of results are you getting?

My pops used to use to use an axe to develop his hook and core strength but obviously in this day and age its quite difficult to get busy with an axe LOL!

So he recommended I try a sledge hammer and tire.....so yesterday I went out and got me a 7Lb sledge and a nice big tyre.

I tried the exercise for 20 seconds with 10 seconds rest and did 5 sets on either side and OH MY DAYS today every bit of my body is aching like a BITCH! Suprisingly it is my back and legs that have taken the biggest punishment.

I'm supposed to skip today and I don't know if I am going to able too....

I have got to say for 20 it is a really worth while investment.

So any of you have any experience with this?

Do 2 routines one where you hit the tire the other where before you hit the tire you pause ( hope the makes sense) I only trained with it a few times still have my hammer in the garden, anyone got more info in regards to strength gain and condition?

Great tool- it won't improve your hook technique but it will condition the muscles you use for throwing it. It also helps 'teach' your body to work in a kinetic chain - i think its called without using wikipedia or google.... i'm sure someone will tell me if i'm wrong.

hit with one side, switch stances and hand placement and hit, switch back and hit for a round? that's a conditioning technique we can do at my gym. smack the tire with the sledgehammer sideways. I like it.

I got another session tomorrow I have two tires one for laying down on the side and the other one I will fix in the upright position.

I will let you know the results I get....I don't plan on getting into a ring for another 3 weeks in any case so I should be able to see the difference pretty easily.

I'm not a big fan of weights so I like natural exercises

Everytime I use weights I tend to get injured.....so I avoid them.

Just old fashioned push ups, chin ups ,dips, skipping, running etc etc

It certainly isn't as loud as I thought it would be which is what put me off before....

Its the only new exercise I'm adding to my work out so I will have a detailed explanation of what it does for me both physically and also in the ring.

I haven't included it regularly for a while, as my focus has changed, but I still go back to the tire and hammer every now and then. It used to be my go to conditioning tool. I'd finish of virtually all my workouts with a few rounds on the tire.

Don't do it while fatigued/tired/cold

Friend of mine tore his rotator cuff doing it
