One of his last professional bouts,

A Sunday Night Telemundo Boxeo bout,

I saw Ruben Olivares get Knocked-out by a 'glorified preliminary fighter',
a local kid, Rafael Gandarilla in August 1980, in some bout in McAllen, Texas.

Ruben came in looking very soft, and by the 4th Round, he was completely exhausted.

The crowd was 'booing' his performance in the ring, and then cheered when he got
flattened in the 9th Round.

Very Sad to Watch.

Always sad when a great fighter goes on too long. Incidentally I remember Gandarilla fighting Jim McDonnel in London though I don't remember much about the fight.
I've just had a look at his record and though a losing one he fought just about everyone in fact he fought Sanchez just before Olivares. Take a look at this [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I saw the 2nd Olivares vs Chacon fight in 1975 on closed circuit TV when Bobby gets k.o.'ed in 2 rounds.

For some reason Chacon was overweight shortly before the fight, and had to lose several pounds to make weight.

Olivares showed no mercy and obliterated him.

Turned down Ruben Olivares as an opponent for WBA Super-Featherweight Champion,
Samuel Serrano, for a bout scheduled for February 1979.

Mort Sharnik (Head of CBS Boxing) said that the 32 year-old Ruben would be embarrassed
by Serrano, and that he did not want to do that to the former-Champion, on National TV.

5-Months later, Ruben challenged Champion Eusubio Pedrozza for the WBA Featherweight
Championship. Ruben was pretty much battered, from the opening bell until the
stoppage in the 12th Round.

Zamora had more raw power in his punches than Olivares, in my opinion.

Olivares' all-round application and higher level of opposition wasted sees him rank higher though, as demonstrated a few times Zamora was no caveman either.

Good catch, ff. It does resemble Cuevas -- even the pose, but it's Olivares.

Olivares - Kanazawa II was pretty good too.

Kanazawa really gave his all in that fight.
