Default Liston vs Marciano

This, above all, is the one I would like to see.

Prime Liston vs prime Marciano.

I don't have a clue who would win it. I think it would be a coin toss.

If someone put a gun to my head, I'd pick Rocky...or maybe I wouldn't.

Who would you pick?

Great fight, Im always trying to come up with fantasy
matchups, so is everyone else. I find myself trying to
Come up with matchups when I should be paying attention to
people haha. Technical advantage goes to Liston with the long
Punishing jab, infighting and outfighting, and I would give Liston
the power edge as well. Rocky was a machine though he
would not stop. Im going with LIston TKO by Doctor
stoppage. Liston was fundamentally and technically solid.
Rocky gets his shots in, but is on the end of the jab, and is
Matched by sonny on the inside. Rocky wants to keep
Going but the Dr. Says no. Sonnys hook breaks his nose.
I can see Rocky winning on sheer will, but my pick
is Liston TKO 8.

Liston by KO or TKO.

Both fighters hit and get hit.

The bigger fighter Listion is also the better boxer with a superior jab and reach.

Big Truck. Little Truck.

Good question if Rock's Suzie Q right hand proves Ali Phantom Punch in Lewston was real.

Rocky might k.o. Liston in one if so.

Interesting matchup. The quitter vs the winner.

Liston by KO in the very early rounds.

Marciano is not physically capable of winning this fight.

After 5 Rounds,

Sonny would go to the left jab,,,,,,and forget about anything else.

Unfortunately, Rocky's short reach would be a problem here, and he would have
to absorb 'jack-hammer jabs' in his face throughout the middle rounds. (6 thru 10).

Rocky's best chance, after Round 10, when Sonny slowed down. But I don't think
Rocky would be able to stop Sonny or overcome Sonny's points lead over
the first 10-Rounds.

Sonny Liston by a 'close' 15-Round Decision.

Liston early or Marciano late. More likely the former.

Liston should be favoured here really.

I like Marciano in this one...tough enough both physically and mentally to stand up to what Liston has to give...and as the fight wears on, could dish out enough to break Liston down mentally and/or physically...in short, Marciano's nuts were too big for Liston, imo...

If Sonny was felled by the..."phantom punch"...up in Maine in 1965...what happens when
The Rock lands the "Suzie Q"?...this is a fight between a champion who QUIT WHILE SITTING ON HIS STOOL against Ali in 1964...versus a champion who begged the doctors not to stop the fight after HIS NOSE WAS VIRTUALLY SPLIT OPEN DOWN TO THE BONE in 1954...Marciano wins this fight on heart alone...no QUIT in Marciano...

You cant compare the 'phantom punch' to the SuzieQ.

They existed in completely two different spheres of ring action.

Ali's 'Phantom Punch' was on display against Sonny Liston in their second fight with Ali defending the heavyweight title.

Sonny Liston comes forward and gets caught by a near instant punch right on his left temple. Liston goes down doesn't beat the count. KO.
People thought the punch didn't even happen cause it was so fast.

'It's a fix!' 'Liston quit!' 'My butthurt!' they say...

(Ali was just pup then)

Look at that wave of muscle reaction in Ali's chest muscles.

Rocky Marcianos's famous 'SuzieQ' was a short right punch that was devastating..to an

old man in the 13th round.

I think a fair number of people would favor Liston, which may well be a reasonable prediction. But I wouldn't feel comfortable putting money down on either. These were two huge punchers who liked to fight. Rocky had the bigger heart no doubt, while Liston had a sizable reach. Who knows?

Liston's heart only came into question against the Greatest Boxer to have ever lived, who would also go on to KO him..

After his two Ali fights, Liston would go on to fight 16-1 his last fight and victory being 1970 against Chuck Wepner.

Marciano ain't no Ali.

Prime for Prime Liston vs Marciano has blood written all over it and pick Liston by KO.

Mr. Ali,,,,,

I don't think you should use the 'Phantom Punch' as a 'barometer' to determine this
bout.
'
Sonny was 'out-on-his-feet' from the 'J & B Scotch' he had been swizzling for the
previous 4-weeks at his training facility, at the Poland House in Maine.

That my friend, is a FACT.

Now, lets just try to figure out a date, when Sonny Liston was at his 'prime physical best'.
Since he was born in May 1927, I would say the 1959 Sonny was at his physical peak, strength
wise.
