Well, the order isn't sorted out, but this is who I'd have on a list pre-1937

Jack Dempsey
Jack Johnson
Sam Langford
James Jeffries
James Corbett
Joe Louis (Still early in his career, but he’d already established himself as an all time great heavyweight)
Gene Tunney
Max Schmeling
John Sullivan
Peter Jackson

If someone white was trying not to be colour blind in 1937, I reckon the list may go like this:

1: Johnson
2: Jeffries
3: Sullivan
4: Dempsey
5: Tunney
6: Corbett
7: Jackson
8: Fitzsimmons
9: Wills
10: Baer
11: Langford
12: Schmeling
13: Burns
14: Louis
15: Braddock

I agree on Johnson and Dempsey on top. I think Corbett is over-rated since he only had 20 or so fights. His two big wins were against Sullivan and Peter Jackson when they were past their primes. Also, I think he hurt his "gentleman" status with all of his racist remarks at the Johnson Jeffries fight.

Well Corbett was all about winning. Corbett did have a temper, He was trying to un egde Johnson vs Jeff. It didnt work of couse. Corbett was the guy that would hit below the belt to get the edge in a fight.

Johnson Jeff is a perfect view in that, but in his OWN fights, Look at his comments in regards to Fitz and Mitchell.

Johnson gets more comments in this regard TODAY because he was black of couse.

I prefer not to rate Sullivan as a Queensberry gloved fighter since he was at his best under a different rule set.

Although some of his fights were under mixed rule set (partly London Prize Ring, partly Queensberry), but he was mostly a Queensberry fighter.

With Sullivan, I beleive his most significant fights were not Queensberry rules with gloves. Sullvian biggest wins in my opinion were over Ryan, and Kilirain. Both were bare-knuckle fights.

His famous 39 round draw with Mitchell was a London Rules, bare-knuckle affair too.

By the time Sullivan went full Queensberry, he was already past his best. This is why I perfer not to rank him with fighters who trained and only used the queesberry rules.

Langford did more at heavyweght then Fitzimmons and beat better fighters so he should rank higher
