Note: the over/under is set for 7.5 rounds. Even though it's for a regional title like their last bout (a 2008 twelve-rounder...), this one is only scheduled for 10.

Simmo is a brawler, not a pure KO artist, but enough pop to gain respect, and a hell of a chin, but it may be showing cracks, he's aging for a featherweight (pushing 30 but more like 40), been in a lot of wars, will walk through hell... Appleby is more of a plenty-in-the-tank, "circle and work in behind a bunch of jabs" type. Younger, fresher, more power, but can be hurt easier. He tends to completely abandon defense when given open looks...which Simpson will give... Simpson's recent bouts since 2010: arguably got robbed twice against Stephen Smith (of the famed Smith clan of British boxing) sandwiched around a decisive win over unbeaten Martin Lindsay...who popped Appleby's cherry in what was maybe a quick stoppage but a bit of an ass-kicking. Got stopped for the first time in his career last December by the Welsh late-blooming power-puncher Lee Selby, who is probably the UK's best featherweight. Appleby's recent bouts since 2010: beat up a few journeymen, lost what many feel was the British FOTY in 2011 to Liam Walsh in a back-and-forth war, and recently got a close and disputed points win over unbeaten Stephen Ormond. |
