Default Why aren't ex-marines/special forces dominating MMA??

My good friend is a Marine/Afghanistan Veteran and he gave me a copy of the hand to hand manual he received during Marine training. A large portion of this manual deals with unarmed hand to hand combat and non-lethal attacks. When my friend demonstrates moves while sparring at the gym, he is so fast with a move he subdues everyone. Its a muscle memory thing he said.

I just wonder, how these unbelievably elite trained killing machines aren't ruling a sport like mma. I know Brain Stann is a great fighter, but why not more ex-spetznaz, ex-marines, ex-SAS, ect fighters out there?

Still a young sport, maybe with time it will happen, maybe a lot of ex-maries were too old when MMA crossed their minds.

From what I understand is most of their moves take advantage of surprise element. Basically dead before you start to defend yourself.

Other than that they take elements of wrestling/boxing into their training and as far as I know they now incorporate BJJ as well. Spetznaz has used Sambo since the beginning I believe.

They won't dominate MMA because as rusty nails said, they're ordinary guys. They didn't practice those arts since age of 5 and it's not their job to fight without weapons. Their "MMA" skills are a very small portion of the arsenal they have to learn.

Also I suspect that their best moves are too lethal to use in the cage. They may be able to kill or horribly injure a UFC opponent one-on-one, but winning a fight against him under unified rules is not the same thing.

Probably becuase troops spend most of their time training to be soldiers, which enatails alot more than just specialixing in unarmed combat, whrere fighters spend all their time specializng in only unarmed combat.

Support our brave troops, lads and ladettes!!!!

The Army Rangers use GJJ, and the Marines use "MCMAP" (their version of MMA) to train soldiers for mindset and teamwork/bonding. Overall, a soldier does NOT spend a lot of time on empty handed H2H stuff. It is very rare that they are going to be caught without their rifle, their sidearm AND their knife.

Also, as a current soldier, you are the government's property and if you get hurt while fighting you can be disciplined for it. Used to be a joke when on R&R guys would get sunburned really bad and get in trouble for it b/c they "damaged govt property".

But, as the sport grows, you will probably see more that like that type of thing getting into the sport after they leave the military. But, as others have said. The majority of guys are just regular guys and nothing mystical or magical about them.

Sergei Kharitonov, Mirko Cro Cop. Whats his the name? The Russian boxer who just beat Toney at CW.

Randy Couture was in the Army for 6 years.

When ex-marines or special forces train they aren't bound by any rules or any type of limatations. You throw just 1 rule in there it changes everything.
