Not a lot of fighters can do what Derry done though, Derrys comeback is very very rare.

Maybe he should have some time out the game and see how the comeback goes.

First things first, I like Paul Appleby. He's given us fans some of the best fights you could ask to see in a British ring. Always puts it on the line, excitement guaranteed.

In answer to the question, I don't think it would be a bad idea for Paul to take a break. Can't do any harm in my opinion.

What did he do ??? , took a break , re evaluated what weight class he wants to fight in (best thing he ever done) and got in shape , its not rocket science is it ???

Certainly seems that way, he should follow Derry's lead as said above.

I remember Andy Kerr absolutely raving about him on Setanta back in the day. He rarely was passionate in giving his opinion but was very forthcoming about Appleby. I think he was talking about seeing him spar and destroying much older, heavier guys when he was a kid.

I was really excited about Appleby when I first saw him. He put his punches together really well and even though it was early in his career, I thought he'd certainly be going places. Sadly, he doesn't seem to have got any better in recent years and as he's stepped up in competition, he's been found out. It's a shame because I really do think he could have had an excellent career. Who knows what will happen with him now? he needs to improve a lot if he's going to come close to fulfilling his potential but I don't think he's with a good enough trainer to do that. Maybe a move to England could freshen up his career?

I agree that he should probably have a break though.

you dont think billy nelson is a good enough trainer
tell that to world champion ricky burns, cruiserweight prospect stephen simmons and dont forget the rest, crucial team member within scott harrisons camp, willie limond hell barry hughes as well. if billy nelson is good enough for these boys hes certainly good enough for appleby

Appleby should take a break, have a few easy fights (he deserves it), and try come back stronger. he needs to work on that defense, its like he literally gives out some punishment only to see how much they can give back!

Derry made a pretty amazing comeback, and it is rare, but I think all it took was some self beleif and career re-evaluation. I didnt know Appleby had to lose serious weight for this, it does explain a lot.

He's not shot, the fact is he's very prone to right hands and has some frailties especially in defence. He gets drawn into a war too easily because he doesn't have any real ring identity. He needs a game-plan and has to stick to it.

He's a very good boxer when he doesn't try to brawl. Sadly last night he looked like he didn't know whether to brawl or box and his hesitancy meant Simpson was just tagging him repeatably.

Billy hasn't improved Appleby in the slightest, so a change of trainers isn't such a bad thing.

he just needs a break....take 8 months to a year out and work on his game, maybe with a new trainer.

btw, another Scot, and former British/Commonwealth champ Kevin Anderson hasnt fought since losing to Kevin McIntyre twice. The last fight was in 2008 which would have made him around 25 years old. Did he retire?

he was rushed to hospital last night after being sick and had to undergo CAT scans and blood tests.

reports are that he seems to be fine, thank god.

he's got no defence, is not smart and overrates himself. He's basically another Alex Arthur.
