I understand they get paid well. I think DeGale was offered around 75k to stay on as an amateur or that might have been what he was paid pre O's.

They are paid well. I believe all their expenses, travel, food etc is provided and then they get a tax free salary.

Think it varies from boxer to boxer but they would all be on good money. They dont really have the time to spend it though.

Really?

Let me tell you, there are British champions out there not making 27k a year out of boxing.

In the lower weights some British champions only get 10k to 15k a fight and after paying 10 per cent to a trainer, 25 per cent to manager and an amount for board tax they take home a pittance. Few of the them fight more than twice a year so the money is ****.

Don't forget as well that the average UK wage between is 21,000 and 24,000 (depending on source) and that includes all the millionaires in the mix before it is averaged per working person. The real average wage in this county is less than 20,000.

If you're a kid like Tom Stalker (who I'm told with bonus tops his 27k up to around 35k-40k) from a working class part of Liverpool, where unemployment is high and opportunities low, making up to 40k a year is big money and the only way to go pro and get back to that level quickly is if you have an Olympic medal. The average salary in some parts of Merseyside is less than 17,000.
