Quarry is severely overrated.
He was never good enough to win a world championship. Jimmy Ellis beat him fair and square.

He wouldn't beat the Johansson of 1958-'59.
The guy that got rid of Eddie Machen in 1 round and Floyd Patterson in 3 rounds. Quarry struggled with those guys when they were older, and he was young and primed.
Quarry beat some decent second-tier fighters. He never convincingly beat a champion or a former champion.

Good match up. Providing Quarry does n't get too gung-ho,I see his better boxing earning him a decision over Johansson.

We aren't talking about Lyle or Foster here.

Ingo was for real. He was the World Champion. He KOed a skilled lighting quick all time great swarmer in Patterson as well as a top contender in Machen whom was actually a superior boxer to Quarry. I have to favor Ingo to blow the tough Jerry out. Jerry can't box as well Machen or pressure as well as Patterson.

Bad style matchup for Ingo. He had one thing going for him: A massive right hand. He would wait and wait and wait to land that punch. When he did land it he could totally change the dynamic of a fight but Quarry was durable enough I dont see it happening in that fight. I think Quarry takes this by decision.

You got to love any one who's punch is named after Thors Hammer.

Good point Philly!
Quarry may well have beaten Ingo (who knows) but the "Quarry would knock him into next week crap" isn't my interpretation by any means)
Let's break it down:
Was Ingo one of the lower tier all-time worst HW champs? Absolutely
Did he have a f*****g right hand from hell? Absolutely?
His weaknesses were as follows:
Typical Continent fighter, jab, right hand, no left hook to speak of.
Never had a fighter's heart, relied on God-given gifts only (much like Cooney)
But...his (underrated) jab would keep many greats off of him for, at least, a while.
Tho a IMO a semi-anomoly, his corner beat down of Machen was a two-fisted impressive display.
His decent stiff jab and his mind-numbing right would give him a good shot against a goodly handful of contenders/champs over the years, at least to make a good scrap of it. I think, overall, he tends to be a tad underrated.

Of course it did. In the late '70s, after I became interested in boxing history, I went to the library newspaper archives to research Frazier-Quarry I. I found it interesting that, many times, Quarry was described by newsmen as the "best white heavyweight since Marciano."

Clearly Ingo did not impress experts as being much more than a flash-in-the-pan, and for good reason, too.

I cannot envision the chinny and hittable Johansson beating a prime Quarry. Johansson would have had his moments -- maybe he'd even hurt and floor Quarry -- but Jerry's toughness, footwork, handspeed, counterpunching ability, and KO power would have carried the day.

Ingo might have gotten lucky against Quarry, because of the devastating right. But for the most part, I think Quarry -- if on top of his game -- would have been too tough for Ingo.

Quarry must be the most overrated of all the HWs who get overrated in the Ali era.

Such a quick opinion means I can't lean on your opinion on this fight at all.
Not to mention that Jerry was a total sucker for a good jab which Ingo had.
Hey, I love Jerry but this "he destroys Ingo", "Foreman avoided him" crap gets annoying.

....just because i didn't read the posts doesn't mean my opinion was quick. both guys fought years ago and my opinion is based on what happened while they were in action....what their merits and demerits were and seeing them fight.....and by the way, that left jab of ingos was purely novice level.
