The fighter touted to be the next superstar in boxing, Adrien Broner, is set to be made the number one contender to Ricky Burns’ WBO lightweight title, meaning the winner of his upcoming September clash with Kevin Mitchell may be forced to face the American towards the end of the year.
Broner, 22, looked every inch the future pound for pound king when he used Floyd Mayweather’s defensive mode and lightning reflexes to demolish Vicente Escobedo in five rounds last night and is now in line for an immediate world title challenge at lightweight. The only reprieve for the British fighters would be if Broner turns his attention to the vacant WBA lightweight title once held by Brandon Rios after the WBO stripped him of his 130lb belt for failing to make the weight. 29 year-old Burns and Mitchell, 27, square off in Glasgow on September 22 for the Scotsman’s coveted belt and may then be subjected to a meeting with ‘The Problem’ with any ensuing contest likely to be held on US soil. Burns was due to face Broner last year until he decided to move up to lightweight and the pair seem destined to meet at some point, although the Coatbridge fighter has a tough challenge to get past Mitchell this autumn. how does Broner get an immediate shot if he failed to make weight for a WBO defence.
Surely the WBO would take a dim view of that and not grant him mandatory status. |

Burns should take this fight.
Broner is being hyped up to the eyeballs, he can make some serious money here. An impressive stoppage win over Mitchell would set it up nicely. Can't help but think that he'll be steered elsewhere though. |

I'd love to see Burns beat him.
It'll be interesting to see what Billy Nelson has to say about it. He was all mouth about Ricky beating Broner if he comes up to lightweight. |

I think if Burns and Broner do fight then Vasquez vs DeMarco would be a good fight. Winners of both fight. |

In the post fight interview Broner mentioned a number of potential opponents and Ricky wasn't among them. But yeah he's gunning for him honest.
