WOW...Frazier does surprise me? I wanted to go with Gavilan as well, but Bassett just edged for me.

I'm a huge fan of Frazier, probably my 5th favourite heavyweight of all time. I'm guessing you never realised that, as you saw me slating him in a few threads? If you look at the comments about his rating, I wasn't slating Frazier at all I was just suggesting that my ranking of Norton could be seen as more plausible. His win over Ali is, in my eyes, one of the greatest of all time, as is Foreman's win over Frazier. The fact I rate the win so highly clearly shows how good I think Frazier was, although it probably was a Frazier just slightly on the slide. It's not that I don't like Frazier, I just feel some things people say about him aren't right

Don't really know much about Bassett, where would you place him at today's level of boxer? My knowledge of the early days of boxing don't really go much lower than welterweight, but I'm keen to watch some film on him if you'd reccomened it.

I was also close to putting B-Hop for 00-09, but I think what he did to Pascal in the 2nd fight was my favourite achievement of his just ahead of what he did to Trinidad, Winky and Pavlik, as well as his performance against Calzaghe. In fact looking I may put him on level with Floyd

I guess I thought you were anti-frazier besed upon a few posts....Oh well, my bad!

As with most of my favorites they are usually Philly guys, guys I have met or seen live on the club circut prior to turning pro and/or gaining recognition. Bassett was a solid guy in the 50's rated fairly highly, but never had the mob connections that many top tier fighters had and was not able to secure a title shot....combine that with coming along in the era of Sandy Saddler. While Saddler was in the service bassett won an interim type of belt in his absence. Ring had a cover and article on saddler's return with Bassett on the cover....unfortunately Bassett lost his next fight and was never able to rise high enough to get back in contention. In 1950 he fought an oponent who died Sonny Boy West....West was complaining of double vision or something during the bout, but was encouraged to continue. When Bassett finally droped him, he fell hard on his head, and died of hemorghing the next day...Never heard much as to how this impacted Bassett??? Not an atg but any stretch, but many of my favorites are just solid contender types.

At the worst he would win a strap or 2 and be a belt holder in this multiple belt era....at his best he would be the man at FW...but likely would have a short stint based upon his inconsistancy.
