Yeh very tough first fight.
We all know Damien has got the goods though. Hopefully the tough competition brings out his best n puts up a winning effort. goin off the world rankings Damien should get the win, he's still rated #2. Marcus is outside the top 30

tough fight for Billy Ward too. drawing the Cuban (world #22) in the first round is never a good thing.

glad to see that Jai's opponent is only 19 years of age though. its good he can get his opening olympic fight with someone who's not a whole lot older then him. there is quite a few full grown men amongst the heavies. Jai may find it hard to match the strength of the older blokes. but he wouldnt in London if he wasn't ready for it!! *edit: just read that Teymur is the world #1 heavyweight. looks like it will be a very tough fight for Jai to start his Olympic career

Just watched Joseph Diaz Jr. look terrific for the US in his 1st round matchup at Bantamweight. Next up for the impressive Diaz Jr. is the world number 1 Cuban who had a 1st round bye. Should be worth watching!

Just watched Balla take out his match with an impressive win on countback, 16 all, 7/5, 4/6, 5/4. Balla had a wonderful last round and was all over the Mauritian with excellent straight combinations really touching up his opposition. Balla go son!!!

for those who dont want to read through the full article on the home page...

the parts bout the Aussies are;

"A very tight contest ensued between Australia's Ibrahim Balla and Aboubak Seddik Lbida with both fighters testing each other in the first three minutes. The Moroccan southpaw was a bit erratic, throwing a few too many wild punches whilst Balla's more measured approach saw him connect with the cleaner shots. Lbida came back in the second round more composed and made his reach count to overturn his first round deficit. Now trailing on points, the Australian orthodox boxer had to throw caution to the wing and go for it and after looking in trouble managed to pierce through Lbida's defences with some good punches. It was an extremely tight contest and Lbida was dejected when Balla was announced as the winner by count back after the scores were drawn at 16:16."

"The ultimate contest of the day saw promising Australian Jesse Ross pit his wits against Abdelmalek Rahou of Algeria in the last of the Middleweight (75kg) preliminaries. This was another very exciting fight as both boxers were throwing a lot of punches, sometimes wildly but a joy to watch none the less. Tied on points after the first round, the Algerian's experience told in the second as he landed a sweet left right combination that had Ross in trouble. Rahou found his swagger and stayed cool as his opponent tried to fight his way back into contention and the Algerian moved into the next preliminary where he will face second seed Ryota Murata from Japan. "

Terrell Gausha looked awesome for the US at Middleweight in the final round getting the stoppage after being down on the cards to the Armenian.

US will get a gold or 2 at least in these Olympics i feel...crowds seem on their side for a change also.
