Default More Skilled: Johnny Tapia or Juan Manuel Marquez ?

Is this a good comparison ?? I believe many here rate JMM higher than me, but I think both were similar skilled, both great....

How do you see this comparison and who was the more skilled?

Neither come close to Eder Jofre. He ranks easily among the top 20 pfp of all times.

I think JMM is more skilled than Tapia. However Johnny is probably more athletic, his handspeed as super-fly was nasty!

JMM is more disciplined in applying his skills, but he doesn't have a wider skill-set than Tapia. And of course, prime Tapia has an athletic advantage.

Yeah, Marquez the more disciplined superior ring-general...knows how to get the most out of his assets.

Tapia more versatile and more of a complete natural talent technically, yet devil may care with his ability and less focused on winning at all cost.

Id say its a pretty fair comparison. Tapia had very underated boxing skills. Where they differ the most is probably in punching power and Tapia liked to brawl more than box so his power inhibited him quite a bit and probably makes Marquez the better guy because he used his natural abilities better to suit his style than Tapia did.

Marquez was the better technician for me. Whilst Tapia was no slouch, Marquez seemed more savvy.

offensive tricks/athletic ability is all tapia, but overall i would say tapia, but marquez would most likely beat him.

Both had (have, in the case of Marquez) a great deal of skill. Before his lay-off, of three years, Tapia was sharper, less emotional, and more of a sharp shooter than he became later on. He still exhibited those qualities in flashes, but was more prone to brawl recklessly. Marquez never loses himself, or his intellect when he fights. So his skills don't get misplace, as often as Tapia was prone to misplace his skill.

Here is where I would say if you count focus as a skill, Marquez edges it. I consider focus a skill. And a big one. One where Marquez is elite.
