Every person I listed was in regards to what they were in their prime. A prime Ali, imo, had the best defense out of any heavyweight. Not so much because of his skill/defensive knowledge, but because of his sheer reflexes and instinct.

I agree, once his reflexes had slowed his defense severely suffered and he was not near being the heavyweight with the best defense.

It was probably someone a bit less interesting who has the best defence.

Joe Louis probably the best counter-puncher. I like Walcott sometimes in that department too, and Holyfield.

Joe Louis had the best combinations.

Chin ? Possibly Max Baer.

this is considering Toney as not a heavyweight or otherwise he may b my candidate in both defense and countering and even a top 5 candidate 4 both chin and combinations .
Toney is top notch in these 4 criteria , but not a real heavyweight .

Orlin Norris is another worthy mention as far as defense goes .
