Julio Cesar la Cruz lost today against Brazilian Florentino Falcao 8-6. Didn't see the match but this is somewhat of a shocker since I have only heard great things about Julio Cesar.

On the good side Roniel Iglesias showed once again his high level by beating Uktamjon Rahmonov 21-15 pretty easily.

This Olympics are beginning to shape up very similar to Beijing 08 where 4 Cubans went into the Finals and all lost. I am just hoping for a very different outcome in London.

Lázaro Alvarez, Robeisy Carrazana and Roniel Iglesias should reach the Finals pretty safe but Yasnier Toledo has a nasty bout next against Vasyl Lomachenko.

My prediction: Lázaro, Robeisy and Roniel will grab Gold. Very hard for Yasnier to beat Lomachenko but hoping for the best!

La Cruz fought the wrong fight all night , he seemed out of focus and ansious to land a big punch , he will learn from this and should be back soon . Congrats to Falcao , he wanted it more , good win for him and should be favorite for gold now . We still got 4 in the semis , Russia , Britain and Ucraine also have four boxers in the semys so it's going to be a cracking Friday . Peace .

Ukraine has 5. That 3rd round was the most exciting round iv ever seen from La Cruz and he showed very good sportsmanship afterwards unlike Stalker who left the ring acting as if he got screwed when he had clearly lost the fight along with his fight vs Kumar. I can't stand Stalker. The Brazilian coaches reaction when the decision was announced was great im not sure iv ever seen someone so happy before and both Falcao brothers will now get medals.

How do you think La Cruz should have fought? He tried boxing at long range like he usually does and when that wasn't working he started engaging more. Falcao slightly got the better of it both ways. He tried to adapt.

Cruz beat Falcao clearly last year in the Pan American Games. He thought it would be easy again and was not focused. That's my guess. And he couldn't adapt once it was clear it wasn't going to be easy.

That's exactly what I think happened , this is the third time he fights Falcao and he always defeats him , last time was in the Panam Games , so all I can think is that he took Falcao lightly and paid the price . Hope he learns his lesson and takes every bout seriously from now on . He's the first Cuban who has really lost a fight convincingly in this tournament tbh , Veitia , Larduet and Savon were robbed IMO . Peace .

Alvarez has a tough fight against the Irish kid Nevin...that should be a beasty fight.

The Lomachenko bout should be good too...and to be honest I don't see him winning that.

The others are decently favorable.

Good luck man.

Busy day today for Cuban boxers and fans, today Roniel Iglesias beat MANGIACAPRE Vincenzo ( ITA ) 15-8 and reaches Gold medal match. Roniel has looked spectacular beating everyone by a wide margin, will face Ukranian BERINCHYK Denys for the Gold.

Lázaro Alvarez lost against NEVIN John Joe 19-14, didn't see the match but Lázaro is out. I don't expect for Yasnier to beat Lomachenko later on today ( but hoping ) so that leaves only Roniel and probably Robeisy going for the Gold.

Cuba is slipping in it's boxing starpower, not because of lack of talent but because of lack of participation among the Cuban people. Yes, this Cuban Team is probably the youngest in the Olympics but they should at least grab 3-4 Golds. I remember when Cuba always used to take home between 5-8 Golds at the Olympics, sure miss those days!

Could it be that other nation might be stepping it up in the talent department as well? You know, now that some counties have introduced Cuban coaches to there boxing programs. Maybe that investment is starting to pay off.

Que piensas?

Hola mi hermano!

You do have a great point my brother and I forgot about that. There are many Nations who have experienced a huge leap in their boxing level due to Cuba exporting " Cuban boxing Coaches ". This could indeed be one of the factors and the other that each day less and less Cubans get involved in sports in Cuba. The reason? COMMUNISM and Cuba's horrible economy.

As Cuba's economy has been deteriorating more and more less people want to get in sports like they did in the 70's, 80's and 90's when the situation was much better in Cuba. The same thing is happening in Cuba's National Pastime: Baseball.

The current Cuban Baseball Team is not even close to their super strong squad of the 70's, 80's and 90's, right now Cuba's baseball Team is not invincible like before. The Baseball stadiums are almost empty as hardly no one goes to see their Teams anymore. If this is happening in Baseball I would say that the same thing is happening in Boxing, possible even worse.

The huge talent is always there but if less and less people are willing to become athletes then Cuba's sports programs are in great peril. Of course, Cuba will continue producing good and solid boxers at the amateur level but not as much as before, when they were " the Boss " of Olympic Boxing. Not that they are not the Boss anymore, as even grabbing 2-4 medals is still considered great considering huge Nations like USA who are not getting a single medal. But for us Cubans who have been used to seeing Cuba's past Olympic Boxing Teams this is simply " not good enough ".

Haha, I think you can say things aren't too bad when you're complaining about your country only winning 3-4 Golds (although I think it'll only be 2 this year). I don't know if this will seem like any consolation, but John Joe Nevin could very well be Ireland's greatest ever amateur. It's rare you see a Cuban outboxed by an elusive slick counter puncher fighting off the back foot, but that's what happened today. If you get a chance to watch the fight I would, I'm sure someone used to watching Cuban amateurs will be able to appreciate the skills and ability Nevin displayed in abundance.

Also about only getting 3-4 Golds, if Savon wasn't robbed against Joshua I really think he'd have taken it. Would have been interesting to see how Savon would have coped with Dychko, but after watching Dychko and Joshua today I believe Savon would have had what it takes to beat him.
Larduet was also screwed vs Russo, and he would have been in with a shout aswell.

Carranza was absolute quality vs Conlon today, I saw the Cuban when he beat Selby and I was very worried. My worry was well founded, as I actually think Conlon fought pretty well but just like Selby his was well beaten. That kid is a certain for Gold imo, and at only 18 aswell !

I'm not sure we'll ever see a country pick up 8 Gold medals at an Olympics games again, not without serious corruption. The break up of the Soviet Union has made International boxing even more competitive now than it was back then, and lots of countries now have strong boxing programs in place designed to be competitive at International level. The rest of the World has caught up on the Cubans and the Russians somewhat in that regard.
One of the divisions where Cuba failed to win Gold that year was Welterweight, where reigning World champion Juan Hernandez Sierra was beaten by Michael Carruth , although with that said the brilliant Joel Casamayor did get the better of Wayne McCullough in the Bantamweight final. Wonder whatever happened to those 2 lads.....
