What makes Jack Dempsey more aggressive than Terry McGovern, for example?

I'd suggest to you that Papke is more aggressive - and generally insane - than Ketchel.

Really? I knew he was a tad crazy, but did Ketchel have some mental issues? What I love about Stanley is that he cemented himself as the greatest middleweight of his day and yet had never been formally trained as a boxer - just like John L Sullivan - what happened to guys like this!

I meant generally insane as a ringman. I think Papke let people hit him. It's only a theory but the guy was ****ing nuts and only knew one way. Ketchel had a shade more, I feel. Although Papke introduced some nice punches, a counter-uppercut is basically what un-did Ketchel and he seemed to uncork it in that fight. So he was no dummy. But he was more "full steam ahead!" IMO.

In fact, if I were to make such a list (and i'm not sure how i'd go about it) Papke would be my personal choice at #1.

There's way too many very aggressive great fighter to come up with a top 10 though, imo.

Aggressiveness is a trait that most great fighters have in abundance.

Could you have a go at a list? I'd be interested to see who you'd pick. Would Wolgast be included?

His style was very 'forward pressure' but I mean the guys who have that aggressive streak in them when they fight. Like the rage Duran would have in him when he started throwing.

.
I dunno Matt. I've always considered Papke to be the more versatile fighter and that it was Ketchel who only knew one way. Check out Papke's fights with Fireman Jim Flynn. He was able to switch tactics in their second fight, box smartly and- some felt- won the battle over the bigger, stronger Fireman.
