Pernell vs Manny..If your fans of both these fighters what would be your prediction?

As much as I love Manny, I don't think he has what it takes. A younger, lighter, more mobile version may at least give Whitaker a few problems, but at 147, with both guys at their best and Pernell not spending all his time sniffing coke, it's Pernell all the way.

Pernell is combining the two most troublesome styles for Pacquiao: he's elusive and he's a great, great counterpuncher. Plus Pernell will move all around the ring and throw consistently instead of staying in the pocket and being inactive enough to potentially let someone just outwork him, as Floyd sometimes will.

Whitaker UD, unless you get the 3 judges from the Whitaker-Chavez fighti judging it.

If Manny would fight too aggresive and try to chase Pernell, I agree his footwork might be a weakness. But if he sticks with counterpunching, I can see him scoring enough to win at least half of the rounds or even knock Pernell down.

So you think Pernell would be less elusive than JMM?

Without trying to sound condescending, how much of Whitaker have you seen? Whitaker uses allot of lateral movement, ie circling. Look at how Manny did when Marquez used lateral movement with nowhere near the ability Whitaker had at doing the same thing. Then look at how bad Pacquaio did against a Shot Mosley's subpar lateral movement

Pacquaio doesn't fight as a counter puncher either, he's a fast puncher so counters space well but Whitaker is very hard to counter, much harder to counter than anyone Pacquaio has faced

Whitaker would be a worse style match up for Pacquaio than Mayweather.

I don't know about a younger lighter version of pacquiao fairing much better. From what I see on film Whitaker was significantly slower as a welterweight than as a lightweight. His skills and smarts made him a great welterweight but his speed wasn't nearly as impressive there.

As a fan of great fighters - Whitaker would take pac to school... any version of Whitaker pre Vasquez beats manny pac comfortably... he`s just too good a boxer for pacquiao IMO.

I think I'm as big a Pacquiao fan as you can find on these boards outwith the hardcore Filippino fanatics, and even I know he'd have next to no chance of beating one of the elite ring generals of all-time in Sweet Pea. Whitaker would box the chops off Pacquiao, Mayweather, and any other fighter from those weight classes since the 70s/80s.

The result, in my opinion, would depend on who's going to counterpunch more. And Manny is not a bad counterpuncher at all. Pernell is also a great counterpuncher, but then again Manny has the footwork, the speed and the strength to work in his favour. Pernell would probably get too cocky in the late rounds, and it'll probably work against him.

Speed would not be in manny's favor and neither would footwork.. I have no idea where you get the notion that Manny has better footwork.. It's wrong, and you need to look no further than Nelson, Either Ramirez fight, McGirt, Chavez or Haugen.. Shit just look at the video posted in this thread and that will clear up any doubt in your mind about footwork and speed.

You can say anything you want about Whitaker. He's a great counterpuncher, solid defense, overall a pretty smart and athletic boxer, but he doesn't have neither the footwork or the speed of Pacquiao.

You keep mentioning Pacquaio's footwork as a positive, Manny does not have particularly good footwork and he's very easy to outmove by a good mover, something he's largely avoided. Whitaker been maybe the best mover in history ofcourse

If Pacquaio faced Whitaker no doubt he'd be talking about epic leg cramps and blaming his socks again or something

Which 'good movers' he avoided? Mayweather?

We might as well talk about how Bob Arum wouldn't let him fight against Whitaker or how the judges would rob Pernell of a clean victory, since it's as relevant to this topic as your last statement.
