It tells us he was 38, and by the time Vitali would have reaped the benefits of his eliminator it would have been mid-2004 and Lennox would have been months shy of his thirty-ninth birthday and out of the ring for a full year (unless he took a tune-up).

Vitali mostly took long breaks between camps, like 8-10 months. A few times he fought as close together as two months apart, but those opponents weren't Lennox Lewis and the stakes weren't the WBC title. There's no way negotiations were going to be expedited to get it to happen any sooner than summer of '04.

Lennox would have been ancient and rusty, which he already was in June 2003.

When, you know..

So he was past it, but should have fought anyway?

The 2nd defense of this third WBC reign was the last of what he had left. He spent his wad, and it was enough to exit on top. Every great dreams of doing that.

How did a rematch help

...Lewis, who'd be in there knowing it would be even more difficult than last time, possibly a great deal harder. Just taking pointless head shots and likely capping his career with an L for no reason?

...the fans, who really needed to find something better to do with their time (or a more interesting weight class to follow) if they were that hung up on knowing the result of a contest between prime Doc IronFist and a near-39 Lion.

...Vitali, who would have received no credit anyway even if he'd dominated rematch against a fat guy with no wind pushing forty?

The only conceivable positive outcome, for anybody, is Vitali (and his fans) getting to "erase" the L-by-TKO6 by canceling it out. Didn't happen. Boo hoo. Too bad.

Anybody who claims that the HW division and boxing itself needed the rematch, or that Lewis needed it to secure his legacy, needs a serious reality check.

"Manny, I don't want to rematch Vitali anymore. I don't even like him."

"You can't be serious!"

"You don't understand. I don't want to talk about it."

"You don't want to talk about it? Then why did you bring it up in the first place!"

"I don't know, are you coming to my retirement party?"

"I suppose."

You are delusional. The rematch was already set for Dec 2003 - the original date Lewis-Vitali was suppose to happen before Johnson got injured. Lewis pulled out then Vitali was cleared by the doctors to fight. Then Lewis retired when it became clear that he would not be able to duck Vitali without losing the title. Lewis knew Vitali was going to win the title in the rematch ahyway so he spared himself of humiliation.

FORCED RETIREMENT

FORCED RETIREMENT

This is the official position from Planet Klit.

Fact is that Vitali just cannot get the job done against great (LL) or even very good fighters (Byrd).

He quit against Byrd when a long list of other fighters have fought through similar injuries in the past (klitlickers have disected every frame of Lennox V K1 and have an interpretation of ever movement and contact, yet they do not look to closely at the tape versus Byrd where Vitali shows no sign of injury before the stoppage and how they ripped the gloves off of both arms with force).

Against Lennox, he was facing the last great champ and could not take advantage of this big chance. Lewis was out of shape, unmotivated and was thinking about retirement.

Most people do not get a big break and Vitali had 2 and could not seal the deal. Now all his fans cry because he never got a third . . . tough shit . . . thats life . . . deal with it
