On the subject of these do's they are only a rip off if you allow them to be. I have done 2 , Duran and Frazier and we had a great night both times. We had photo's with the fighters plus a few ex fighters turned up and mingled with everyone.
Anyone who's mad enough to bid for 'official merchandise' deserves to be ripped off. I know a guy who makes a living out of these events and he buys most of the gear he auctions on e-bay for fuck all and then flogs it to pissed up wanna bee's at these events and makes a killing.

holding those auctions when it ISNT for charity is pretty shit. but fair play, if people are mad enough to bid...

I think having money to burn helps as well. I have bits and bobs of boxing memoriabilia (sp) but even the reserves on those auctions are usually above what I'm will to to pay.

aye but having a bidding war over something you could get for a fraction of the price on ebay seems a bit stupid, but if its in aid of charity then it makes sense.

thing is aswell, as the companys who provide the memorabilia take there cut , and the money that is made is usually anything over the reserve

Ive attended hundreds of these events, and not all have been ex fighters as the guest speaker, i have seen conteh, bruno, benn and many more.

Other non boxing speakers i have seen are Alex stepney, david platt, even jeff winter lol.

All of the events i attend are ran by my local rotary which i am a long standing member, and all the proceeds do go to the given charity, i certainly would not attend any other unless it was in the correct hands, ie rotary.

Sportsmans dinners are fantastic, in the right hands.
