It was suggested this week that some of the world’s leading professional boxers – Floyd Junior, Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan among them – could return to the Olympics under new moves by the world amateur governing body for boxing to allow professionals to compete at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But unfortunately it is flawed. Some may return, but not boxing's big earners.

A feature of the competition is that current professional boxers can have their Olympic eligibility restored if they compete in the first season of the APB and the AIBA President, who is also and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, is confident some of the sport's biggest stars will be tempted to compete in the event because of the lure of Olympic glory.

President Wu has said: "I hope we can attract the very best professionals out there. I don't know definitely if they will compete in AIBA Professional Boxing but I am hopeful they will because the Olympics is something very special and there is no greater prize in sport than the Olympic gold medal. The door is open to them.”

May 3 (Reuters) - More than 50 professional boxers will compete at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, according to International Boxing Association (AIBA) president Wu Ching-Kuo.

"They will definitely be in Rio," Wu told Reuters in London where he was watching the final of the AIBA's World Series of Boxing (WSB) season between Dynamo Moscow and Milano Thunder.

"Look at the Olympic programme of other sports like basketball, volleyball and handball, they have professionals and we are the only organisation that doesn't," he said.

Launched in 2011, WSB featured 12 city franchises this year with teams of five competing against each other to reach the final staged in London's ExCel Centre, the venue for this year's Olympic tournament, on Wednesday.

Next year will see the launch of AIBA Professional Boxing (APB) a professional tournament without vests or head guards in which boxers will receive regular salaries.

"In Rio there will be 56 boxers from the APB and 10 qualified through the WBS individual finals," Wu said.

APB, Wu's brainchild, would mean that boxers coming through the amateur ranks would not have to turn their backs on the Olympic Games in their prime by going down the established professional route, he said.

Any boxer earning a living as a professional in the APB would still be eligible to compete at the Olympics.

i must have missed it. it is the biggest development in boxing since the glove. i dont know why you didnt research it and push it. i posted it in the main forum a few minutes ago, they are all over it....

Its stealing the limelight and incentive from the thousands of dedicated ams out there. the actual lifeblood of the sport.
not to mention the potential for a guy whos had 7 amatuer fights to come up against a battle hardened warrior thats had 85 pro fights.

Pro boxers don't belong at the olympics any more than pro basketballers do. Having said that, the pro basketballers don't have to 'turn amateur' for a year to qualify. So why should the boxers?

Sadly Swingin mate i think that will the case with most of the top dogs.

There is no way the AIBA has enough bank roll to pay Floyd or Manny enough to keep them fighting in the APB for a year.

Not to mention Floyd will want to be his own promoter. I doubt Golden Boy or Top Rank will give up any of their fighters to the APB.

if Rio does get a good showing of pro's then guys like Jai Opetai, Damien Hooper, Cameron Hammod etc.. and pretty much Australia can kiss their chances of an olympic medal good bye!

Didnt you take your prozac today nuffy nuts? Im sure Floyd and Pacman, and RJJ will be jumping at the chance for all these endorsements to join the olympic games

Fact is, the only pro boxers who would do this are the ones that couldnt win a world title and are within the age limit. You havent thought this through and are just barking at old news
