This is probably true.

Where was Gustafsson's name in the discussion?

He's probably a fight or two away from a title shot, but he's an up and comer, a young guy, presumably keen. If he fought and got completely dominated nobody would judge him too harshly for it.

Maybe they want to spend a fight or two building him up into a name before he challenges, because he shows potential for being a good long-term top-level guy. And if he doesn't get brutally derailed he'll help them in the European market.

He's currently booked to headline a card against Shogun, but that's in December. Months away. That main event could be changed to any number of fights with plenty of notice.

Otherwise, I found it strange that all kinds of names were being thrown around, but Gustafsson was never one of them.

The UFC offered the fight to multiple guys who turned it down before Sonnen accepted. Who knows who those guys might have been? All I know is that I can't blame any of them. Going into that cage with Jones would not have been high on my priority list either.

Didn't stop them from offering it to Shogun. And then calling him out publicly for not accepting.

Did they really offer it to Shogun, is he on a medical suspension?

Did I mention that Forrest Griffin is under a medical suspension and isnt cleared to fight yet? Because Forrest Griffin is under a medical suspension from the NSAC and cant take a fight until he is cleared

Yes and yes. His suspension would have ended about a week before the fight, so he basically wouldn't have been able to train.

@lorenzofertitta tells me Shogun Rua also turned down shot at Jones to set up Belfort as Sept. 22 opponent. ... Fertitta says, "Thank god Belfort is from the same generation as LIDDELL, Hughes, etc. REAL fighter!"

"We were in Sao Paulo and my phone rang about midnight. It was Lorenzo's (Lorenzo Fertitta is a partner in the UFC). Lorenzo was on another call, so I talked to him like half hour later. He offered me a rematch against Jon Jones because Lyoto had declined it and asked me to give him an answer in ten minutes. I hung up and Mauricio was there with me. We talked and called Dida in Curitiba and we got to a conclusion we should accept the rematch, but only if Shogun had a couple of months to train and it would mean a fight later in October or in November. I said that to Lorenzo but he said there was no time because Jon Jones's fight is on September 22nd. Unfortunately, he couldn't give us this time but he understood. Mauricio accepted at the time the new fight against Jon Jones. The ideal is a three-month camp but he said yes to a two-month camp fight. He wants to fight Jon Jones and it sucks it won't happen now. But Mauricio's shot will come."

Perhaps a REAL promoter would give a FIGHTER more than 10 minutes to save his ass.

Wow 10 min that is barely time enough to take a shit an hour would be more reasonable

No need to shit on a guy on Twitter because he refused a fight at midnight with 10 minutes notice and only 1 month for a training camp and being in another country!

Shits getting ridiculous. At least after they piss off every single draw they have left in the company the Zuffa management wont have time to tweet as they will be too busy crossing their fingers that Rory Mac manages to keep half the Canadian fans that GSP brought in

They werent bitching when Machida and Shogun made their last UFC on Fox ratings look somewhat decent.

Firstly those ratings weren't decent and secondly they haven't really been attacking Shogun or Machida.

In context not dropping numbers like they have been and during the Olympics are decent to me and they'd need to add more ''star' power to claw some back And calling the likes of Jones and Shogun disgraceful over the past few months and the whole ''Anderson Silva money'' malarky with Machida are issues that are better kept behind close doors as opposed to twitted, youtube ect... Especially when the alternative is Phil Davis and Guff carrying the LHW division fella

They were only up against the Olympics on the East Coast and its not as if the previous show didn't have serious competition (Mosley vs. Alvarez, Avengers). Plus the promotion for this special was much improved than the previous one (hell at least they did a countdown show). I think to be honest it showed that Shogun nor Machida mean all that much more to the average television viewer than Nate Diaz...which is kinda scary when you think about making a success of the UFC on network television on an ongoing basis. I think the December show's rating is going to be very interesting - not convinced Henderson vs. Diaz is the right main event to draw a good rating but we'll see.

And I think you're making too much of the impact of White's comments. After all the 'Anderson Silva money' comment goes all the way back to the Summer 2011 and Machida's not only been given a title shot since but then managed to jump the queue for another one by beating Bader. Equally Shogun didn't disappear after the whole argument surrounding him turning down Texair (sic). Most fighters get that its Dana and sometimes he says dumb shit. There's no comparison between that and what White's said about Jones which is up there with his burials of Silva and Ortiz. But meh they turned out all okay in the end as well. So basically I guess I'm saying don't take what White says too seriously or overstate its impact.
