Can't think of a single good reason why he should have fought Sonnen.

Jones was justified in turning down the fight
Im actually surprised that the 12 year olds in the Sherdog heavies are so anti Jones on this because they usually hate every single thing Dana does or says
I gotta say Danas rant on Jones actually surprised the shit outta me
Hes the guy you expect to lead your company into the future and you just tried to turn your entire fanbase against him
I honestly think Dana is cracking up under all this pressure
Its well known that hes an insane workaholic and this global expansion/Fox deal/losing stars left and right because of dirty tests and injuries has gotta really be putting some crazy pressure on him
He himself said he needs to step back a bit because of his health but yet he cant let himself trust his baby in the hands of anyone else

I have mixed feelings on it.

On the one hand, the UFC screwed up by making the entire card rely on one marketable fight. Henderson screwed up by not disclosing the injury until it was too late. (Which is FAR worse than anything Jones did IMO, but Hendo gets a pass because everyone loves him). So it seems unfair to point the finger at Jones and Jones alone.

On the other hand, Jones is a performer and an entertainer. And what's the #1 rule for anyone who gets people to spend money to watch them perform? "The show must go on."

Sonnen didn't deserve that fight but I feel bad for those fighters who trained long and hard and won't be able to get a paycheck when it was expected.

Yes, it should never have been offered in the first place, and frankly, he has no business fighting Belfort in three weeks. These are totally meaningless fights that are about Zuffa's profit margin for the year rather than the legitimacy of their 205 lb. title.

People are talking about "incentive" here, what is his "incentive" to beat anybody then? Beating Sonnen would be a title defense, and it would give the fans a chance to see him fight. The new face of Nike, it would give him a chance to go out and perform in front of millions of fans and increase his marketability against a HUGELY popular fighter. Chael Sonnen has built himself up to a point that even if he fought JDS next month, people would still tune in and pay for PPVs just to see him get his ass handed to him.

Jones absolutely should've taken the fight. He was in shape, he had a full training camp and the replacement they offered him was not drastically different stylistically.

The champions responsibility is to defend the title against ALL challengers. And the incentive is the belt.

It was in the last minute that he knew 100% that he couldnt fight yes he injured himself but he tryed to train even if he was injured and show up for his date with Jones went to different doctors and what not

Turning down a farce of a main event that would have led to fans paying $50 to watch it is GOOD FOR THE SPORT. What the UFC execs wanted to do was bad for the sport. I like the sport, hence I support what JJ did.

In my opinion, champions don't turn down fights.

People are saying "Sonnen didn't deserve a title shot" do you know what? I Agree with you.

But they had 8 ****ing days to find a new opponent for him, 8 DAYS!!! In that respect, they could of done worse than Sonnen.

What exactly were Jones reasons for turning down the fight?

I didn't even know he was penciled to fight Belfort until the other day

Chael stylistically is pretty good for him.
