You should tell most of those amateurs to get in with the professionals, because they sound more skilled than many of the professional belt holders today.

And by the way both of those have recovered from this brutal bout to post 1st round KOs! Irineu has actually scored two first round KOs.

There is just no substitute for modern, skills, training, Nutrition and advancements in technique is there?

and here is big Matias showing off that world famous armpit shot in a first round demolition of a highly skilled opponent. What is Jess Willard going to do when modern skilled amateurs like Matias unleash techniques that were unheard of in Willards day?

Here is Irinea in one of his unrecorded fights/exhibitions, i think it was against one of those amateurs Suzy was talking about. Note that Irinea dealt with things a lot better than Willard managed to deal with Jack Johnson even though both opponents had exactly the same shaved head.

A major criticism is his technical limitations. He is often criticised for fighting with his hands at his side and relying on his height and reach advantages for his defence. This is ironic since the fighter who is pretty clearly the second beat heavyweight in the world at the moment employs a very similar style with considerable success. A lot of the criticisms are based on the Dempsey fight, where his defence was unravelled very badly, but would you judge Joe Louis on the first Max Schmeling fight without reference to his other filmed performances? The Johnson fight and the Moran fight show a 6’ 6’’ fighter, who utilised his height and reach to employ a minimalist defence. We are in an era dominated by fighters like this.

Willard has some exceptional physical attributes. The reality is that all of the top super heavyweights have lacked some key ingredient. It is probably fair to say that no super heavyweight other than Willard, has ever combined power, durability and stamina so effectively. It seems incomprehensible to me that these attributes combined with his height and reach, would not translate into significant success at world level today. Getting Willard ranked in the top ten today ought to be easier than a good sh1t after a hot curry. It is possible to gain a ranking without fighting anybody world class today. Willard’s combination of height, range, power and durability, ought allow him to annihilate that kind of opponents that Chris Areola fought on his way into the rankings. I would go further and say that they would be too much for many of today’s top 10.
I thought he looked pretty respectable fighting Floyd Johnson at the age of 41, and that was after a 4 year layoff.
Jess was the template for the Klits ,imo.

A fighter with limited skills. He did have two assets though. Toughness and guts.

His defence in style is similar to Vitali but it's nowhere near as good, that style of defence is based on reactions, speed, athleticism and stamina. Things Willard didn't excel in

What was Willard's second best win again?

Not that it helps my case very much, but while looking for articles I found this. Apparently Bob Fitzsimmons dropped a young Jess Willard in sparring.

Nice article ... funny , I've read accounts posted that had Willard getting the better of Luther ...
