Besides Dempsey vs Willard, In the modern era Ive never seen such a size difference Cooney towering over Spinks, And Spinks beats the shit and sweat outa him for 5 rounds, plus Conney goes down 3 times..Great fight!....Spinks was 30 and 0 with 20 ko's comin into this fight.

Rather or not Cooney was a T.V. champ or not..It doesnt take away the fact that Spinks beat the shit outa a guy 30 lbs heavier..And in prime fashion

well Cooney's form after that Holmes fight was nothing special. the best version was against who, Phil Brown? He was steered clear of top 10 guys and was back to C graders.
Speaking of C graders, why was Spinks taking on a guy like Tangstad? He has 2 decision bouts against a faded Holmes, and this is what we got? I can understand a reluctance to fight Tucker, but there were certainly more competitive matches to be made. Then, it's a 1 foot in the grave Cooney. That's another reason why a lot of people did not like his chances going into that Tyson fight---quantum leap in opponent abilities and guys like a 1 foot in the grave Gerry and Stefan Tangstad over the course of a few years, does not prepare a guy for a 23 year old ko artist when he's the old guy. Or was your opinion that Tyson would have had a tough time with Cooney and Tangstad? |

Not detracting from Spinks' victory, which was good, but Cooney was pretty washed up at the time they fought. As limited as Cooney always was,if he'd been at his 1981/82 best,Michael would have had a much tougher mountain to climb. |
