Default Struve wants Werdum

NOTTINGHAM, England At just 24 years old, Dutch heavyweight Stefan Struve (25-5 MMA, 9-3 UFC) said there is still plenty of time for him to earn a UFC title shot.

But at 6-1 in his past seven fights and with all six of those wins coming via stoppage the 7-footer may find his name called sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, after earning a "Fight of the Night" win over the previously undefeated Stipe Miocic at Saturday night's UFC on FUEL TV 5 event, Struve has another name in mind: Fabricio Werdum.

"Werdum would be an awesome fight for my next fight," Struve"I think I can cope with him on the ground, and I think I can rough him up on the feet."

Struve and Miocic headlined Saturday's UFC on FUEL TV 5 event, which took place at Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England. The evening's main card aired on FUEL TV following prelims on Facebook.

Struve was actually behind on the cards after five minutes, as Miocic used his quickness and athleticism to move in and out of range while firing off punches to the body and head.

But Struve turned things around in the second, and as Miocic slowed, "Skyscraper" started to find his range. A series of right hands wobbled his opponent, and Struve rushed in for the finish.

"I was pressuring him," Struve said. "I hit him with a couple of good shots before that, too, and I saw that the shots were having their impact.

"I thought he slowed down in the second round. He was trying to get away, and I was trying to finish him, so I took advantage of it."

Meanwhile, Werdum is 5-1 in his past six fights. After a June 2011 loss to Alistair Overeem under the Strikeforce banner, Werdum has racked up a pair of wins in the octagon over Mike Russow and Roy Nelson.

Werdum is 7-2 in his past nine fights, and his lone losses in that stretch were to Overeem and current UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos. Not that long ago, it would have seemed implausible for Struve to be calling out anyone in the upper echelons of the heavyweight division, but after Saturday's victory, he makes a compelling case.

"I don't think there's a lot of guys on a four- or five-fight win streak in the heavyweight division right now," Struve said. "I have four finishes in the last four fights."

UFC President Dana White declined to comment on the possibility of the matchup. But after predicting the winner of the Struve-Miocic fight would likely be in the top five or six fighters in the division, the UFC boss confirmed he believes the Dutch youngster should now be considered among the division's best.

"He's in there," White said. "He's well inside the top-10."

Werdum hasn't fought since a June victory over Russow, and he's not currently linked to another opponent. While there have been some rumors he could potentially serve as a replacement opponent for Daniel Cormier at November's Strikeforce event in Oklahoma City, neither Strikeforce or UFC officials have made any announcement suggesting that contest will come to fruition, which leaves Struve's request at least possible.

And if you listen to Struve, "Vai Cavalo" might be best to take the fight now before the Dutchman reaches his full potential.

"I'm 24," Struve said. "Imagine what I can do in four years or five years."

I want Werdum to fight Mir. Struve could fight Hunt but I don't know if this is the right fight for Hunt after an injury

I think Werdum annihilates Struve.

IMO Hunt would prolly be able to KO Struve within the first.

But Struve oculd also subb Hunt within the first.

I think a fight VS Werdum is a good call for Struve now, but I think Werdum has the edge on the feet and on the ground...though fight, war Struve !

But I'm Still in the Hunt express one stop for the belt !!!
