I'd say it was more due to Yuri's mindset of a pure thinking-type outside boxer and his general calmness rather than his inabilty to fight at a higher pace.

He also could fight a bit on in the inside ("cough" Ricardo Lopez "cough") as his fight with Cha (?) showed.

Nazarov literally burst into tears when he found out that he had appendicitis right before the 1988 Olympics.

Nazarov had his appendix removed right before the 1988 Olympics.

Tszyu went to the Olympics instead of Nazarov.

Four month later still suffering from the after-effects of surgery he fought in the USSR Amateur boxing championship.

Orzubek reached the final but lost to prime Tszyu via TKO in the 3rd round.
It was the only time he was ever dropped and stopped in the amateurs.
