Default Ranking Jimmy Wilde

Where do you put him? Not only which number or in which range of numbers but in whose company? Is he the greatest Fly ever? Is he the greatest Welsh fighter ever? British Isles fighter?

Thoughts and input appreciated.

seeing as jimmy seldom weighed over 7 stone in his prime he has to be considered on the p4p all time list

Best Flyweight, yes.

He is shoulder-to-shoulder with Fitz in terms of British rank. Jim Driscoll was just as tremendous a talent (if not as unusual) but the Peerless ones resume is not as well realised.

He's become the default #1 at fly and as you've hinted he's listed amongst the greatest British fighters of all time pretty frequently, and I understand why, but sometimes i'm not convinced. The real mark of a great pre 1940's fighter in my opinion is that the closer you look, the greater they tend to get - this has been true of Fitzsimmons, Ketchel, McCauliffe, NP Jack Dempsey, Harry Greb and others for me, but it has never been the case for Wilde, who is as mysterious in his own way.

What it boils down to, basically is two things - who he beat and how he looked. Wilde's resume isn't that impressive any way you cook it. He beat bigger guys, for sure, and had great power, for sure, but he's nothing like in the the league of Greb, Fitz, Walcott for these exploits and he hasn't mopped up a golden generation of men his own size, either. In an ATG p4p sense I think he gets overated more than a tad sometimes.

At fly, I guess i'd make him #1, but I think you could argue Lynch, Perez, Wolgast, Canto and maybe Genaro above him if you wanted to, I don't believe in his lock. Special fighter though.

Greatest Flyweight

Greatest Welsh fighter

If you saying Fitzy was not a Brit, then Wilde is the finest British fighter ever.

And finally a top 12 all time Queensberry Rules fighter.

Bus Station>Wilde

As McGrain said and as I touched on earlier, he gets the benefit of the doubt and is the default no.1 Fly. Not IMO. Wins over Lynch see him rank in the top 100 P4P though.

I fail to see how us young 'uns give Wilde 'the benefit of the doubt' when those who actually saw him fight were transfixed by the cantankerous mite.

As a second helping to this little snippet I ask anyone to give me a little breakdown of Wilde's opponents...

EXACTLY, and thats why I don't do lists... because they are IMPOSSIBLE to be perfectly precise!!!

they are without doubt a good measure, especially those compiled by the real historians and experts, Fleischer, Rose and todays Tracy Callous and his ilk. But there are just too many TOP Fighters with very little between them.

the opponents and contenders of some them were just as great, but some never get the recognition.

also IF you dug deep for ever Great Champion and Era, you'll always find those few fighters that people just didn't want to know. IF our hero's are great but some of them ran from the Burley's of the ring, then we have a good alternative history there.

Wilde IS Great, BUT Not Alone, none of them are!!!

Imo the number 1 flyweight and he was a short time lineal champ at bw.

His position with me fluctuates between 20 and 40.

If we're going on resume at Fly I'd say Wilde gets the 'but we don't know a great deal about his opponents, some of them were obviously quality' pass.

Whereas with Canto I can say multiple Betulio, Oguma, Vargas etc etc etc wins

I have no issues with Wilde being given the tag of 'greatest Fly'. I just think with a division as dense as Fly to consider him head and shoulders above everyone is taking the piss.

To those boxing experts of pre 1940s, jimmy Wilde was considered the greatest flyweight fighter ever, since maybe Jimmy Barry. In his prime Jimmy Wilde was unbeatable save for a tko at the hands of a top flyweight Tancy Lee in 1915, which 1 year later Jimmy Wilde reversed. They called him the "mighty atom", because of his tremendous hitting power that
flattened 99 victims in a career of 145 bouts. Wilde lost only THREE times
in 145 fights,by ko only at the hands of Tancey Lee, which Wilde reversed, and at the end of his long career ,when in his final two bouts, Jimmy Wilde was kod in the 17th round by the bigger HOF BANTAMWEIGHT Pete Herman, and in his last fight in 1923 by the truly great Pancho Villa.
I rate the mighty Atom, the greatest flyweight that ever lived, followed by
the great Pancho Villa...Cheers.

And the K.O appears fatigue related judging by the footage of the stoppage.
