Two important differences here:

1. VK weighs around 70 lbs. more than does Joe
2. VK was off for 4 years before the Peter fight

Vitali Klitschko is the Joe Calzaghe of the HW division. That is, he has a very high workrate, particularly compared with other HW's. Another example of this phenomenon:

Vitali Klitschko vs Lennox Lewis

VK --

Thrown: 432
Thrown/round: 72 (6 rounds)

LL --

Thrown: 222
Thrown/round: 37

So, VK threw almost twice as many shots/round as did LL. And like the Peter fight, he averaged in the low-70's of punches thrown/round against Lewis, a phenomenal number for such a massive fighter.

VK was kind of gassed in the Peter fight, but when you realize how huge he is and how many shots he was throwing (not to mention his age and the long layoff he was returning from), that fatigue is more understandable.

Everyone understands how insane people like Calzaghe's and Margarito's workrate is. To better appreciate Vitali Klitschko's dominance, it helps to put his punch output into perspective against men far smaller than he is.
