ivan calderon faced the weakest straw-weight champion in moises fuentes but still lost suffering multiple kd's. at 37, with a small frame even for his weight, calderon should hang those boxing gloves. one of the great pure boxers of this era. farewell iron boy...

The world changes in a flash for the fighter who trades on speed. One day he can’t be caught; the next he’s taking a knee under pressure he didn’t know existed in the boxing ring. It is the saddest sight to see in fights, the metaphorical equivalent of watching a Ferrari Italia F458 being driven off a cliff. The only difference is the speedster can be polished off and made to run again, as Ivan Calderon was this Saturday night in his home of Puerto Rico against Moises Fuentes. Fuentes was defending the WBO Minimumweight strap, a trinket that even the Champion himself likely regards as belonging to Calderon on some level, the diminutive technician having held it for four years between 2003 and 2007 before moving up to annex the same strap at light-fly. |

Calderon deserves respect for what he has accomplished in this sport. But it's clear that the attributes that have allowed him to be the master technician he once was are no longer there, and therefore he should retire.
