Larry was just as tormented soul, first Ali, then Cooney, then later in life he became haunted by Foreman. A sad individual indeed. |

Larry always walked around with a chip on his shoulder. Never gracious and quick to insult. I think if he would have carried himself better he would rank higher all time.

Larry tried to trash talk like Ali.......He was awful at it. Some of the stuff he said during the lead up to the Cooney fight was terrible and not even close to being witty or funny. To his credit he did say at the post fight pres conference that he wasn't Ali and wasn't going to try to be anymore.
Holmes has grown on me over the years great fighter who had the misfortune of following in the shadow of Ali. ![]() Wish there was more footage from the build up to that fight online as it was on every tv channel and newspaper across the States just about everyday in the month leading up to the fight. Was a huge huge deal in the Summer of 1982. |

That, in a nutshell was Larry's problem as champion. Always trying to be funny and witty like Ali, and always coming up way short. He was not funny, was not a good looking guy, yet he continued his cheap Ali imitation. No charisma at all and couldn't sell tickets to save his life. That said, he was still a great fighter, but he spent too much time trying to be somebody else instead of just being himself

I don't think Larry was the most articulate Champ or the best rhymer for that matter. He also had a Hopkins like racial overtone which may have been to compensate for getting stopped 3 times by White Nick Wells 2x and Duane Bobick in the amateurs (called DQ but Holmes was rocked and held after warnings. I like Larry but you are right Chris, I remember the only thing he could come up with for the 6" Marvis was to call him a midget

"Looney Cooney" was pure genius.
Holmes was a genius. He also brought us ..... Leon "Stinks" Spinks Tex "Slob" Cobb Mike "Diva" Weaver David "Gay" Bey Scott "Wank" Frank and Ray "Worser" Mercer .. ![]() I mean, let's be honest now, he was clearly better than Ali. "Rabbit" doesn't even rhyme with Patterson !
