I hate these all or nothing posts.

Does lifting heavy weights with shitty form and always injuring yourself because of lifting too heavy cause injuries later on in life? Yep, I'm sure we can all agree on that.

But, does lifting properly with proper form cause long term health problems? Nope, no evidence for that.

We can ALL find anecdotal evidence of a "heavy lifter" who has shot shoulders/back/knees. I can also find anecdotal evidence for people who never lifted at all and have those same problems.

So are you trying to tell me that if I do improper pistol squats with bad form I won't have any knee problems because it's "bodyweight"? That's just dumb.

As with ANYTHING physical, technique technique technique. There are actually ways to increase power OR strength with weights. I dont know the formulas or definitions offhand but google the difference. When I lift I always use strict form. I also try to get my buddies to do the same. I might be short (5'7") but I can squat 235 lb for 5 reps with PROPER form. No belts no injuries no wraps no gloves. I dont believe in that for lifting. Too cumbersome. Gloves cause a weak grip thus lacking forearms. Belts (when squatting or DL) will weaken your abdominals. Wraps/hooks same as gloves. Way I see it if you cant support it dont lift it! Dont use tools which will weaken you in the long run. Look at the Old School boxers like the Mauler (Jack Dempsey). Body weight exercises, and hard labor. At one point he was a miner (old school miner with picks and explosives) and a ditch digger too I believe. lived to his 80s.

hey roache, lifting heavy can cause some serious wear and tear on your body even more so than most other exercises. The strain those heavy wieghts put on your joints, bones and muscles is extreme. As you get older you should definately try to keep your heavy lifting somewhat minimal. And no matter what you should always do proper warm ups before heavy lifting and use proper form when heavy lifting.

As far as heavy lifting being the cause for major injury that is definatley possible, but not neccessarily more so than even boxing or other sports in general.

Sure the incredible hulk dude can blame heavy lifting for his pain in his old age, just like an ex pro running back in the NFL could blame football for how there old injuries mess them up later in life.

I LOVE lifting weights.

I'd go as far to say that it's probably my favourite hobby.

Can't beat that feeling of getting stronger, breaking a PR and getting a new PR/B.

Amaze's me when people bang on about the benefits of B/W exercises... If you think you're getting stronger and fitter WITHOUT weights, just imagine how much stronger and fitter you would be WITH frequent weightlifting sessions!

Plus knowing that you're lifting a really decent weight with great form, getting those DOMS in your legs (love that! Ha Ha) and generally just becoming fitter, stronger and leaner etc is a GREAT feeling!

But hey, Boxer's are ALWAYS the last to learn about the benefits of using weights!

You can do the same thing with calesthenics. Going from two arm pull ups to one arm pulls for example.

Most people I know in the gym can barely knock out 10 quality pullups.

Calesthenics does the opposite. It builds up your joints. So knowing this, why lift weights?

That's why I close mine when I get beaten up...plus, I find that crying like a little girl helps lessen the beating.
