None, styles were much different (bareknuckle boxing or a transition) most of the time before him.

Actually, Micguel Cotto- although not as hard a puncher- wouldn't be a bad pick.

Edwin Rosario warrants a mention, too.

I also think of Arguello in terms of Louis. Joe did have faster hands, although Alexis had underrated quickness. Arguello was better coming off the ropes than Joe was. El Flaco Explosivo enjoyed a height and reach advantage over most opponents that Louis didn't. But those are relatively trivial distinctions.

I think Cotto is too much of a swarmer to be compared to Louis.

Not always. I've seen him stand off and box enough using the jab that the comparison to Louis's style seems valid.
