That'd explain how he looked so bad against Barrera.. he was getting used to all them slow punches and Barrera lit his funky looking ass up

I fought at 168 and I used to spar with heavyweights quite a bit. They hit like a load of bricks and you're taking quite a bit of damage even on blocked punches. Maybe in joking Naseem sparred with some heavies, but that size difference would be insurmountable if the heavy went full bore against him.

There is footage of him sparring Clifton Mitchell here:

I remember seeing a piece Sky did on Hamed's preparation for Barrera. They showed him spar with a HW but only bodyshots, the HW said Hamed hits hard and he felt his punches.
EDIT : the video was posted but it's just a small excerpt, I can't find the full piece. |

At the Ingle gym everyone spars everyone, though its not always full contact & they do lots of body sparring.
Even after Nas won a world title he was still sparring with young kids & bigger guys. |

How serious was it as part of his training? I mean, most amateurs have sparred heavyweights at some point. Extreme size differences are not the most productive thing for either fighter, but whatever floats your boat, sometimes you don't have that many sparring partners to choose from.
